assuming it's not a tradition to name after a family member...

assuming that it isnt tradition to use the name of a living family member, what names have you made an effort to avoid for DC's first or middle name? siblings? cousins? extended family? friends? friends children? would you find it weird if someone used your name as their DC's first name? middle name?

I feel like so many names are "taken" already!

Re: assuming it's not a tradition to name after a family member...

We are having the same problem. We both have alot of boys on both sides so all the "good" names are taken. We would not use an immediate family members name. We are considering one of our nephews middle names as a first name.

I wouldnt like it if someone in my immediate family used my name or DDs name for a first name...for a middle, eh, sure why not?

I know what you mean. One of my favorite names is the name of my co-worker's daughter....but I think that's ok. We don't hang out outside of work.

But boys names would have been another story all the good ones are taken.

My living cousin's name is our first choice for a name.
A friend of mine's sister named her daughter her sisters name

I think its ok no matter what. its a name. yes there are lots of names to pick from, but if you like it, just use it. if people get all bent out of shape over you picking the same name that they used, they have much bigger problems

same problem here! DH has 20 nieces and nephews and all the names I like, they have! I dont want my baby to have the same name as one of his/her first cousins so all those great names are out for us unfortunately.
I also am avoiding names that a few close friends have used. But we are considering a name of one of my cousins...so would be this baby's second cousin I guess?

We too have so many names taken. Especially on the girls side. Which since we are having a gril made it difficult. Our middle name is shared with one of the nieces middle name. But honestly if someone named their daughter my first name i wouldnt care. I also wouldnt care if someone used the same middle name as our expected DD. But i would care if you wanted the same first name as expected DD. Thats weird & honestly if i had to figure out something so should you! lol lol lol

My sister used my two favorite girls names for her daughters and a lot of the other names I like sound very like their names so I'm having a hard time. A distant friend at our club named his son our favorite boys name (which we were always going to use) and now I refuse to use it in case he thinks we are copying him. Luckily we already decided on another name that I love and DH is getting to love Chat Icon

I feel your pain. We have this problem too.. While DH's family seems to not care since they have 20 people with the same names (italian)... I'm aiming to not use a name that has been used.

It's hard where to draw the line of names not to use.. friends, cousins, etc.. What about a co-worker's kid, is that "taken" too? Chat Icon

It's so hard.

Re: assuming it's not a tradition to name after a family member...

I think for a middle name - anything is fair game, regarless of who has or has not used it -

for the 1st name, I personally avoided all of my cousin's kids' names
A. b/c I wasn't really crazy about them
and B. b/c even if I WAS, I wouldn't want the confusion

I loved the name Kevin - but my Uncle is Kevin, his son is Kevin (who at 31 and 6'2" is still called "Little Kevin") and my cousin's husband (daughter and sister of Uncle and Little Kevin) is Kevin as well - That poor guy doesn't even get called Kevin, we call him by his last name !!

My "Kevin" would have been 'Baby Kevin' until he turned 40 !!

Re: assuming it's not a tradition to name after a family member...

I'm a little OCD about this....for FIRST name, I won't use names of living family members, their kids, our friends or their kids, co-workers or their kids or any names I have a "bad" association with...

Our next door neighbors have a basset hound whose name is Lucy...and our friends have a dog named Peyton....so those are both out for us too..

For me, it has to be a name that isn't in my life at all yet....

I will say that I'm a little more flexible about middle names...I like those to have meaning, so I'm okay using someone's name who is important to us.

Re: assuming it's not a tradition to name after a family member...

i was thinking the same thing when we were trying to think of a middle name for a boy...

we didnt wanna use any sibblings, or cousins, or nephews, friends babies etc.

Dh's father recently passed away in the middle of us looking for a middle name for a boy, and so we decided it would be perfect to use his name.
