Maternity Clothes Frustration

I feel like it's impossible to get decent maternity clothes without spending a fourtune, epscially for work. I'm petite and everything I find just doesn't fit me right. I can find the basics no problem, tanks, solid T's and what not but when it comes to dressier tops and dresses and pants it's so hard!! Where do you shop??

I've already tried: Old Navy, Gap, Destination Maternity, Forever 21, Kohls, and H&M.

I may not be much help because I did have some luck with the stores you mentioned and I am not petite (although I am 5'4" and thin) but it was really hit or miss as far as what items I liked. I've managed to keep costs down pretty low (my one splurge was a pair of pea in the pod belly panel jeans on sale for $69).

These are a few favorite work-appropriate items:

Black skinny work pants - $29.99 (LOVE THEM! although I wear them with flats and not as skin-tight as on the model. my fashionista boss complimented me on them before I was "out" to her about my pregnancy. I linked to the petite version for you but I have the regular)

black flare belly panel work pants - $29.99 (Like them, prefer the skinny fit of the other pants and they are a little big on me but they are very comfortable and pretty smooth under tighter clothing. Maybe I'll grow into them. On colder days I wore my UGGs under them all day)

I recently bought a long black cardigan on clearance at Banana (non-maternity), and have been mainly in regular tops so far.

I also bought this dress from Target which I like a lot:

patterned dress - $29.99 (although I'm pretty sure I paid $24.99 for it in the store, and it's a little longer on me but a nice length)

im petite too and found dress pants at macys. i cannot find any dresses in petite, so i just buy regular and then have them hemmed. i've bought 2 skirts for work too but i havent had to get those hemmed - for whatever reason they are a good lenght. in shirts i've been buying size small - but i never buy petite shirts anyway.

Re: Maternity Clothes Frustration

Have you tried skipping the god awful maternity crap and wearing your pre preg pants w/ the bella band?

I am 36 weeks and still wearing my suits (bella band, and jacket unbuttoned obviously) - I also wear a tank under my suit or fitted T - none of which are maternity though -

The only thing I really bought 'maternity' were the dresses b/c they were much more comfortable - I found the 'faux wrap' ones to be the most flattering - try to get something that doesn't scream MATERNITY when it's on the hanger, in my experience, those are the pieces that look 'normal' on your body, and not like a tent !!

I also bought myself a pair of maternity 'spanx' @ motherhood, they are not really like reg suck you in spanx, they kind of just hold everything in place and smooth it out - and are SO comfortable

Thank You so Much!! I actually bought 2 of those work pants from motherhood (29.99). I love that dress from Target though I might order it. I'm 5'2 also thin (well started out that way). What size did you get?

I bought everything in a size S (the work pants and the target dress). I'm really trying to avoid buying too much maternity clothes and I personally think the dress doesn't scream "maternity" and as long as I'm not sick of it after Chat Icon I may continue to wear it post-baby as well. I'm actually wearing a "maternity" top from DM (will see if I can find it on the website) that doesn't look maternity at all and which I will definitely wear post-baby and which will be great to cover a little flab too Chat Icon

Edit: here is the tank

it looks awful on the model but IRL it's a cute flouncy tank that doesn't even look maternity and has nice beading on the top.

Edit x2: I hated everything else I tried on at Target aside from that dress. I didn't think the quality or fit was very good. I do like DM for comfortable maternity bottoms and I like gap and gap maternity for tops.

Re: Maternity Clothes Frustration

I am petite as well.... I went shopping this weekend and bought tunics to wear to work. I went to any store and just bought a size bigger than what I wear usually. Now i am on the hunt for leggings a size bigger!

Once I start getting bigger I will buy one or two pairs of dress pants and a bunch of maxi dresses. I am trying my best to not buy to much stuff, but its so hard b/c a lot of my clothes already do not fit!Chat Icon

I got a great pair of leggings from destination maternity. They are so comfy I'm tempted to buy a 2nd. I live in them on the weekends.

I'm a big fan of Ann Taylor Loft online. They're having a 40% off sale right now. I like that I can by my pre-pregnancy size by number rather than S-M-L!

Re: Maternity Clothes Frustration

I found to get work clothes at stores I shop at just got bigger sizes... I am small as well and it worked out just fine that way, this time I am not working so I dont need dress clothes so I am living in tee's.
Also, pants, I bought a size 8 or 10 from express and wore them under my belly... bc I am normally a 2 it worked out for me, the ****** was baggy sometimes but maternity pants never seemed to fit me right... dress ones at least.

I am not petite, so can't really help on that part (I am 5'6), but have ahd a lot of luck with Nordstrom online. I also try to mix and match maternity and non-maternity pieces.

Re: Maternity Clothes Frustration

Most of my maternity tops are NON maternity tops. I just buy Large and Extra Large sizes. The bottoms skirts and lounge pants/yoga/sweats I also buy a large or XL. However, for work pants I purchased them at Burlington Coat Factory in the maternity section. They aren’t the best quality but they have held up pretty well since my first pregnancy. And I got them for a pretty good price. I am 5’ and all the pants are extra long on me. I hemmed them myself using an iron on strip I bought at Walmart. This is a little trick a friend put me on to. It’s saved me a ton of money because I hem all my pants this way. When they were looser on me in the waist or belly area I used the belly band from Target so they wouldn’t fall off.
