Be honest

If you buy a high end luxury item $$$$$ do you pay cash or is it usually on credit and you pay it off?

If you pay cash, did you save up or does it just come out of your regular everyday funds?

I debit everything. If dh was buying, he would charge it. I hate to chage, he hates to debit. It balances.

Re: Be honest

Ever since getting ourselves into debt Chat Icon if we buy a high end item we only pay cash (or on the debit card).

The only things we really charge these days are items from Target and that's only because we get 5% off purchases. We don't use any of our other credit cards.

I use my credit card for almost everything, but I never carry a balance. It all gets paid off when the bill comes in.

I rarely have a lot of cash on me, and I only use my debit at the ATM. Plus I like the benefits my CC provides and the miles/points.

Re: Be honest

so when you guys are buying high end luxury items like bags, shoes, jewelry is it because you saved up for a special purchase or did it come out of regular funds?

I have "mad money" that I save up and since I don't shop for sport anymore I can splurge on big ticket items sometimes.

Ditto.

ETA: I usually have to budget it a little between like maybe two paychecks, but since I don't shop so often it usually comes out of my regular money.

Ever since having DD I don't buy high end items any more , I just can't justify spending the money even if and when I can afford it. But IF I do buy something that's a little bit more $$$ than I normally spend I use cash, always cash, I don't like charging. And usually I just save up for the item I know I want.

Regular funds, we just don't get anything unless we can afford it. Really, really big purchases we also tend to wait until after a birthday or holiday and use some of that money as well (like when DH got his Macbook Air).

Big ticket items are paid by credit card and paid when the bill comes.

We usually only buy these types of items when we know we don't have any other out of the ordinary expenses that month. For example we just bought some new furniture last weekend so no bags, shoes etc for us this month.

that's what I was getting at. Not the single part because we both like to spend when we have it but putting away a little each pay so you can get it.

or just having that kind of cushion so you can always treat yourself..

or sacrificing other things to get it..

or..just flat out putting it on a credit card and paying it off.

Credit card but with the money in the bank to cover it. BUT I have a ceiling for stuff- I can't see spending $500 or more so a splurge for me would less. I have never spent more than $200 on a bag, for example. I was in debt when I was single and I never want that to happen again.

Re: Be honest

I don't buy too many things now that I'm unemployed. But when I was working, I would treat myself to things as long as we made our savings goal that month. Now, I've never spent more than $300 at a time on any one item, and usually it is a lot less than that. I have a dream to have an LV bag someday, and that will come out of savings from my paycheck, once I have one.

ETA: to answer the original question, we pay credit for almost everything and pay off the balance every month in full.

Before I make a big $$ purchase, I always look at my accounts and make sure I can swing it that month.

Re: Be honest

I charge everythign but we pay off our amex every month. I dont buy anything unless we could typically pay cash for it but just use the credit card out of convienence. we dont have any debt except our mortgage

eta: i am getting something expensive coming up and i'm going with 24mo interest fee financing to pay for it instead of charging it on the card or paying cash
