when would you move?

Assume you live in a 1 bedroom apartment and are planning to move to a 2 bedroom apartment and your lease ends one week after your EDD (baby #1). When would you want to move?

I'm thinking that (a) it's a terrible idea to try to move 1 week after my EDD, and (b) easier to move before rather than after the baby comes. Plus, it would be nice to be able to set up a nursery and get settled before.

We can end 4 weeks early with a 2 week penalty, 6 weeks early with a 3 week penalty, 8 weeks isn't an option for us, and anything earlier than that is a huge penalty. The penalties may be negotiable but there will definitely be some kind of penalty if we end early and rent isn't exactly cheap as we live in the city...

thoughts? Chat Icon DH is leaning towards ending 4 weeks early and I keep wavering between 4 and 6 weeks.

(Or... would you renew your lease for another year to avoid moving, even though you could get a second bedroom for about what you pay now for a 1br?)

for me personally, i would rather move before the baby is born so we could be settled and have the nursery set up. i would do the 4 week early w/ 2 week penalty.

Re: when would you move?

i would pay the penalty and move 4 weeks before at least.

we live in a 1br apt in the city and are moving sometime before the baby comes. In our case, we have 2 babies so I couldn't see bringing them back to a 1 br in the city, but one could work. I just think it would be nice to have a nursery set up for them before they get here.

Re: when would you move?

i would do 6 weeks with the 3 week penalty.

I am almost 36w right now and while i could move, i really would not want to be moving right now and there is a difference between how you'll feel between 34w and 36w.

Plus if you go 3w before your due date you could end up coming home from the hospital to piles of boxes...

Re: when would you move?

I'd def do the 6 weeks before. You want to have enough time to settle in and gear up for the baby and also take into account that you could go early.

Re: when would you move?

we moved before because we were told by all the moms we know it would stink to move after and i'm so glad we did. LO will be here soon and we had time to settle ourselves into the new space and set up his room. if you can do it first before baby comes

Re: when would you move?

Why don't you just do the 4 weeks and if you're ready to move in sooner, just move sooner? I don't know if it's worth saving 1 extra week's worth of rent just to be "forced" to leave 2 more weeks early. Does that make any sense? Like instead of paying the extra week's penalty, keep the place for 2 extra weeks?

Do you have to decide now? Can you just decide once you have your new place?

I'm not sure how much notice we need to give (need to talk with the leasing office again) but apartment-hunting is a pain here and we can't even look really until a month before our move-in date because places rent as soon as they come available.

Also... if we end 4 weeks early but move 6 weeks early we'll be paying for 4 weeks we don't need rather than 3... although it would give us more flexibility I guess. Chat Icon
