Tell me everything about Lindenhurst

I'm from Nassau...husband is from Queens. We have been looking throughout Nassau, but my REA found a house she thought we would like in Lindenhurst. I went yesterday and LOVED it!!!!!!!

We really didn't want Suffolk, but it's not far from where we live now (N. Massapequa), and it really has everything we are looking for. My husband would still be on the Babylon line..

I just know nothing about the area. Please tell me!!!!! Thanks!

Especially the schools! :)

DS isn't in school yet, so I can't comment on the schools other than that I hear they're good. Is the home in the village area? I'm not in the village, but I do hang out there on occasion. The library is nice & there's a nice coffee shop right on Wellwood Ave. Venetian Shores park is great! We used to launch our boat out of there & there's a small beach & a water spray park for the kiddies, in addition to some sports fields...I also take my son down to Fireman's Park (off of Wellwood) pretty often and he loves it there - they have a great playground & a pond w/some ducks. I also like the location of the town - there's lots of shopping nearby (Tanger, etc)...If you have any specific questions, don't hesitate to ask! Chat Icon

Thanks. I think it's in the village because if I remember correctly, the owner said he pays village taxes. It's on Jefferson Ave near the train. How is that area? Driving around it looked nice.

Thanks for the info :)

keep in mind that it may be more costly to obtain insurance if it's near the water :)

Re: Tell me everything about Lindenhurst

My best friend lives there, he loves it..he is a few blocks south of Montauk Highway, by a small marina/boat docking area. He has nice neighbors, but pays a FORTUNE in flood insurance. Since he works on Route 110, his commute is a breeze.

The only negative I see him complain about is the lack of nearby restaurants. He is a maybe a quarter mile away from a catering hall (Chateau La Mer) and maybe a few diners on Montauk Highway but he is a good 10 min drive away from Babylon Village or cool eateries like 'The Spoon' or the 'Post Office'. If he wants Applebees, TGIFridays or Red Lobster - he has to drive for a while to get there..

Re: Tell me everything about Lindenhurst

We have lived in Lindenhurst for 7 years, and LOVE it. DH is from Deer Park and I am from East Northport.

I love the schools so far. My kids go to Alleghany Elementary. I worked in both the middle school and the high school. The high school is very sports oriented, but very decent academics. It's got some drug issues, but no more than any LI high school. I actually found Northport HS to have way more drug stuff going on than Lindy.

The neighborhoods are very blue collar. On my block, I can name 4 corrections officers, 2 NYPD and 1 FDNY. People are out in their yards on the weekends. Kids play out on the block. The strong neighborhood feel was what I like. People go to things like the tree-lighting, little league parades, etc. They actually GO, like for a good time. This blew me away when we first moved here.

There are some not-so-nice aspects. There are parts (especially North Lindenhurst, and the industrial areas off Hoffman) that are not so nice. In the summer, bands of teenagers kind of roam in the village, which is annoying. The Village is HORRIBLE at snow removal. Don't expect to ever get your street properly plowed, unless one of the sanitation guys lives on your block.

Any other questions, FM me Chat Icon

Great town. I raised two girls here, they were very active in sports. One is still in the High School she plays Lacrosse and the other is away at college. Its a wonderful community with plenty to do locally ! Venetian shore , ocean beaches, craft fairs , street fairs, marathons, safe Halloween. I could go on and on. Moved here from queens 16 years ago. No regrets.Taxes are a little high. But I really dont know where taxes are actually low on Long Island. The village is great but there are many nice areas outside the village as well . Good luck and if you purchase that home let me be the first to say welcome to the neighborhood Chat Icon

Re: Tell me everything about Lindenhurst

Thank you!! IT definitely sounds like a town we want to look into more and like a place we would like to live. I appreciate the feedback.

I'm still getting mixed reviews on the middle school and high school..
