I don't think so. The window to apply in Town of Babylon is Jan 1-March 1. Not sure if that's the same everywhere on LI.

You can apply, but it won't take effect for another few years since you will be applying after the deadline.

Re: can I still apply for star
if you close after the deadline, aren't you grandfathered in under the previous owner?
i closed on my previous home in June, and received the STAR rate under the previous owner, then reapplied for myself the following year.

You can be if the previous owner had star. We closed in april and we got the benefit of the previous owners star. We applied in April even though it wouldn't take effect until the next year. We are in the town of islip and they took our application. Some towns only accept applications during certain times so call the town to find out.

Re: can I still apply for star
I just did mine yesterday. My deadline is May 1 in Westchester (Rye Town). We closed last year end of July, and got a letter recently that we need to re-apply, but I do believe since previous owners applied, we got it for the remainder of last year based on what the letter said-- so I think it may be grandfathered in. Your realtor should have info.

Re: can I still apply for star
In Suffolk County:
If the previous owner had a STAR exemption, it will carry through for the 2011/12 tax year (tax bill issued 12/1/11).
If they didn't, you are too late to file this year (the deadline in Suffolk is March 1 of each year).
Some towns will not accept the applications year-round. Check the website of your town (the assessor's office), it tell you.
