Ill be honest, I think even the OP felt bad. She was put in an impossible situation and made a decision. I dont fault her for that.
I was talking to my husband last night and he agreed with the OP. We have been on the train, and there had been large people in a 2 seater taking up 1 1/2 seats. I wouldnt even bother asking to sit there because it would be rude of me to try and squeeze in, making us both REALLY uncomfortable.
As well as if I saw someone yapping on the phone, I would seek out a different seat.
Or someone who really smelled.
Or somoen who looked REALLY sketchy.
Thats all I'm sayin. The spirit of her post was NEVER "I hate fat people". The spirit was "people can be rude".

Although I agree with the fact that if a person can't physically fit in the seat they shouldn't bother asking but to say no to anyone with an open seat is not right IMO. I never say no to anyone be it someone with bad BO, someone who cooks with "strange" spices, someone who has a bratty kid, etc. A seat is a seat.
Her OP wasn't that extremely offensive - I replied back pretty civilly until some replies turned into a horrible attack on people who are heavy which was insulting. Truly a disgusting show of the true hatred heavy people face daily.

Perhaps. But TPTB do not monitor posts on here. They really do not. It's only when that report button has been hit that they even know when a post is getting heated. I'm guessing it got to a point where tons of people were reporting it that they figured "okay let's get rid of this one."
I wouldn't have bothered to report that one as I've seen muuuuuuch worse on here than that thread.

I know I'm in the minority but I agree.
The OP never said she hated fat people...she said she was asked a question and gave an honest answer. According to what the OP said technically there was not even a full seat available...it was half a seat. I don't see why she got flamed for her response.
IMO it's rude to try to sit down where you obviously don't fit...I don't care if you're fat, skinny, short, tall, etc...it's just rude. I don't ride the LIRR but I see it all the time on the subway...a sliver of a seat is available and people try to squeeze themselves in (skinny people included) knowing that they will now be half sitting on top of someone else. That IMO is rude.
I understand it's public transportation and you will inevitably get touched, bumped, etc but that doesn't mean I want someones hot sweaty arse on top of me and I sure as hell don't want to put mine on top of someone elses...
