It's a beautiful island. We loved it there, and hope to go back some day. The beaches are gorgeous, the people are friendly, and we felt very safe walking through town, even at night.

I know most people tend to stay on the Dutch side (St. Maarten), as that is where most of the shopping, nightlife, casinos, and action is.

We stayed at the Grand Case Beach Club, which is on the French side (St. Martin), in what is known as the culinary capital of the Caribbean. We ate at some of the best restaurants I have ever been to on that trip! There is definitely more of a European vibe to the French side of the island.

It is a small island so venturing to either side from the other is easy enough to do. We also took a day trip to Anguilla by ferry, and St. Barth's is accessible by boat as well.

we stayed at the Pelican which is on the dutch side. we loved it. casino and deli on site. its timeshare suites so there's a kitchenette. we got it off of cheapcarribbean.com. beautiful pools, tennis courts, their own water sports shop. would def recommend.

It is a beautiful island....we're going to be there at the end of April...I can hardly wait!

Rent a car and visit as many beaches and restaurants as you can!

Re: St. Marteen

I have been there several times and I was just there in March. If you are looking to stay on the Dutch side I highly recommned the Pelican. Great resort. You can walk many places but having a car rental is key. There are so many places to see on this island. Def venture to the french side and go to Grand Case. A strip with all restauratns. Also Orient Beach (has a nude section which I do not lay on LOL) is by far the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. I spend 2 days on that beach always. Also Dawn Beach is gorgeous as well. As far as restaurants here's a list of ones I love:

Dutch Side:
Boathouse
Bamboo Bernies
La Gandola (my favorite)
Jimbo's
Pineapple Pete's
Rare
Ranchero's
Cheri's cafe is fun for drinks and burgers

You must go to the Sunset Bar and Grill it is right near the airport. Great little hangout with burgers, etc... and a beautiful place to watch sunset also you watch planes take off and land literally right above your head. It's great place! Also ferry over and spend the day at St. Baarts is very nice to see the island but also very $$$$. Shopping in Phillipsburg is great and very discounted. Also go to Marigot on French side some cute shops there. I got my Longchamp bag for $90 here it is $145. Enjoy I am so jealous I cannot wait for next year to go back!

It's a very safe island nobody bothers you at all.

Re: St. Marteen

St. Maarten is my favorite island! We stayed through our timeshare but you can get a rental there - Flamingo Beach Club & Resort. It's on the Dutch side and walking distance to restaurants.
Pineapple Pete's is a must! The food is delicious!
Definitely do a car rental. It's cheap and you'll be able to get around easier than by cab.
As the PP said, Phillipsburg is the best for shopping. I also recommend doing an excursion to Pinel Island.

St. Maarten is amazing.
The Divi has a beautiful beach... new rooms, and spa.
Id recommend it.

I agree the Cheri's is a great place to have a drink and a laugh.
And La Gondola is a nice night out.
Good casual food -- Greenhouse.
