name dilemma

So we've decided on a name for our baby girl Elyssa (pronounced Eh-lee-sa). When I told my closest girlfriends our choice one of them said that it sounded just like the name she gave named her cousin (Alisha).

While I'm aware that the names aren't very similar at all, the way she said it made it sound like I was copying her. I knew the name she gave her cousin, but it never even crossed my mind when DH and I were coming up with names.

Am I over thinking this? Could it just be pregnancy hormones taking over my mind? Guess I'm just looking for reassurance. Thanks for reading.

Eta: Some background: Her uncle (who's on the older side) married a younger woman from oversees who does not know any English. Hence why they asked my friend to name the baby. The baby was born early last year so this was a recent event.

I'm going to still go with the name because that's what DH and I like. It's not so much that she said the names were similar, but more so of the way she said it that made me think twice.

Re: name dilemma

Alisha and Elyssa are totally different names. I wouldn't think twice about it and if she says it again just say "cool, their names will flow well together!"

I realized after we named our daughter that her name kinda rhymes with her cousins name: Megan and Devyn. They both have the same sort of sound to them. I don't think it's a big deal at all.

You know people are going to mispronounce her name saying it like Alyssa right? But once you correct them it should be fine. DD is going to have to spell her name her whole life and deal with people putting random Hs in it. We're ok with that. Just good to be aware of.

Beautiful name choice!

I'm confused. Why did she name her cousin? Why do I care about that? LOL

Back to you...Elyssa and Alisha are not the same and even if they were, why should it matter? My BFF's niece is Gabrielle (who I will mention is bad and constantly in trouble if you want to do that name association thing) and that's our number 1 girls name. I don't care. Love the name. My #2 name is Lillian. My 2nd cousin's kid is Lillian. Again...don't care. Love the name.

Don't worry about what people say. Name your kid whatever you want. Once she is named, nobody will give a hoot anyway.

Funny story - my uncle named his daughter Alyssa. Guess how he and his wife insist on pronouncing it? Alisha. Chat Icon I was 7 when she was born and Chat Icon even back then!

Name your baby whatever you want to name your baby! No one else gets any input on it but you and your DH. Chat Icon

Re: name dilemma

talk about similar names.... DD and her cousins are Leah, Delia and Aleigha.

Totally sound the same, but they are three different kids so it fits each fine Chat Icon

Re: name dilemma

Why did she name her cousin? And why should her cousin's name have any bearing on what you choose to name your DD?
It doesn't even sound like someone that you would see or be around. I'm sorry, I just don't get that part.

Name your baby whatever you want. Keep the Elyssa... and don't worry about this other girl. I have a friend named Elisa... (same pronunciation as your baby but different spelling). Elisa (Elyssa) does sound a little like Alisha... but I don't see why that even should matter. And it certainly shouldn't matter enough for your friend to be upset over it. It's not like there aren't other Alisha's, Elyssa's, Alyssa's, Elisa's in the world... it happens.

I have a friend who is currently pregnant... and she actually steals my other pregnant friends' names for their kids. That's another story though.

I've already had a few people ask me how to pronounce Elyssa when they see it. Several people have even said to me why not spell it with an A not realizing the difference.

BTW, love the name Megan and she's a beautiful baby girl.
