When renting an apt...

... is the landlord required to paint by law?

DH and I are moving into a new place next Friday and the landlord isn't painting. If we want to paint (which we do) we have to do it ourself - even just a basic color. When we used to rent, the landlord always painted every apartment before a tenant moved in and yesterday someone at work said it is illegal for a landlord not to do it. Is that true?

I'm renting a unit in a condo building.

Re: When renting an apt...

not a requirement. We rent part of our 2 family house and DH has painted in the past after each tenant to make the apt look nicer. Or he usually gives the new tenant the option of painting a color they want.

Re: When renting an apt...

nope

I rent my co-op and the tenant wanted to paint.
I told him ok but he was doing it/paying himself.
I let him go in a few days early to do that though.

I just painted 4 years ago and it's fine.

He just wanted a different color.

I think it used to be a law with rent controlled apartments that a paint job was mandatory every few years or so.

Re: When renting an apt...

I don't think its a law, but the apartments I've rented have been freshly painted in a neutral white or off-white.

Part of me thinks if the apartments weren't freshly painted, I would have been able to get DH to paint in colors of my choice! Chat Icon

Re: When renting an apt...

not a law.

some landlords do paint a neutral color because they don't want the tenants to paint i themselves and they want to have basic white or beige colors.

personally... i like when i get to paint the rooms because i can pick the colors. I hate white walls so it would bother me if the landlord painted it all white for me.
