Group B Strep
Hi all,
I tested positive for Group B Strep. This is my first pregnancy and I am a bundle of nerves over this. I read up on it and of course I see things that no pregnant woman wants to see.
Has anyone else tested positive for it? Was everything ok?
Thanks for any advice or feedback :)
Thanks, Jackie

Re: Group B Strep
It's very very normal and extremely routine. And usually nothing to worry about!
I was GBS positive with my first pregnancy. All it means is that the doctor will want to get at least 2 rounds of antibiotics into you during labor, before you start pushing. This is to try to prevent anything from being passed to the baby as they pass through the birth canal and out the vagina. It is just a little bag on an IV that you don't even notice with everything going on! Sometimes, even if they get the antibiotics into you before pushing, there is still a small chance the baby can be exposed. If that is the case, they will put the baby on antibiotics after he or she is born for a few days, and they will probably keep them in the NICU just for monitoring. In most cases, the antibiotics take care of it and it's no big deal! My doctor told me about 20% of pregnant women test positive for GBS so they deal with it all the time and it is rarely an issue!

Re: Group B Strep
So if they give it to you via iv, can you still walk around and stuff? Is it in there for a long while? I am positive too.. not really concerned for some reason (too busy worrying bout everything else I think ) trusting the meds will work...
But i didn't know they were via IV.

Re: Group B Strep
I too tested positive with my first pregnancy. It wasn't a big deal but it stunk becuase as soon as my water broke I had to go to the hospital for IV antibiotics which were administered every 4 hours even though I didn't go into labor until almost 15 hours later so I basically rotted there. I would have rather labored at home than the hospital but it is what it is. Also, the antibiotics stung like crazy when they went in. I was not prepared for that crazy burning sensation. Hopefully the same won't happen to you.
