please take my tree poll :)
Dogwood:
Flowering pear tree:
which one would you plant as a "border" tree in your backyard? I can't have one that hangs too low or it will be in our patio area...
FYI, if you're unfamiliar w/ these trees, both flower in the spring, then keep nice dark green leaves summer/fall (at least the flowering pear that we have does)

I had both at my first home. I prefer the large flowers on the dogwood and I like the way the bark looks. Dogwood is my favorite tree.

Some dogwoods can be prone to disease, so you should research disease resistant varieties if you're considering them. We have one that we had to prune dead branches off of and it looks awkward unless you prune it correctly because it's not that vigorous about growing new branches.
Check out the Eastern Redbud too. There was a place by where I used to work that had five of them in a line and the color in spring would stop traffic. There's nothing else like it!

thanks!! I noticed some cats (or raccoons?) have enjoyed scratching up the bark on my flowering pear tree this year I also read something about the smell of the flowering pears flowers? it's planted in the front of our house so I've never noticed it since I don't sit out there....
thanks for your input!! I'll be sure to put up pics once I decide and plant it! I'm not sure if I should pick one up at a garden center or order online, they seem cheaper online, but then again, I think I'd be starting w/ a smaller planted tree since they're measuring from the root (i.e. one site has dogwoods at 5 feet for $99, but that might only be 3 feet or so above ground...)

that is gorgeous!!! I'm kind of partial to the white flowers...mainly b/c I'm not telling the hubby I'm planting a tree and I think if I choose one with girly pink flowers it might put him over the top he's not a tree/flower person.....the secret to a happy marriage is to just do it and deal with the consequences later

Gotcha! There's white flowering Cherry and Magnolia trees too. I know someone who has a Magnolia and the flower petals are so big that when they fall and dry out, they stick to whatever is underneath them. Might be something to consider for yoru patio.

We have flowering pears at my office building - they STINK when they're flowering - literally. Really disgusting smell. It's probably stronger because there's about eight of them in a small area but it's very noticeable.

wow good to know!! we only have 1 in the front of the house along the sidewalk so I've never noticed, I definitely don't want any stinkiness in the backyard, unless I have unwanted visitors I'm trying to get rid of

thanks! annoying petals would definitely be a deciding factor....at my old house we had those annoying berry trees that stained the sidewalk so I don't want to deal with anything that needs a lot of maintenance/clean up (other than the usual autumn leaf clean up type of thing!)

We live in a complex and there are flowering pear trees all over. I think they're absolutely gorgeous when they're in bloom, but they really are the stinkiest trees ever! For a few weeks after their initial bloom, they emit a really foul odor. And, they are very weak. After every rain, snow, or wind there are always downed branches around.
I'd go with the dogwood. They're beautiful trees!

Re: please take my tree poll :)
We had a gorgeous wheeping cherry blossom tree in our front yard that was killed by disease. We have two flowering dogwoods in the back that are also being attacked by a disease.
Our "tree guy" recommended we get a Kousa Dogwood to replace our wheeping cherry in the front. It blooms about a month later than flowering dogwoods. It also has beautiful edible berries (see below) The most important is that it's resistant to the disease that attacks flowering dogwoods.

thanks!! but I don't think we want any kind of berries since the tree will be close to our patio set up and I don't want to constantly have to clean them....I also read about the kousa dogwoods, there's so much to consider...weaker tree vs. messy tree lol
