Comments from boss?

Is it illegal--or just plain crappy--for my boss to continuously make comments about my maternity leave? I'm thinking of going to HR but I don't want to rock the boat any more.

Every other day I hear "well if you weren't leaving..." or "if you didn't have to be out..." or "well we wouldn't have to do this if you didn't need time off..."

I've been here for 4 years, I plan to come back to work after 12 weeks, AND gave them about 5 months' notice! If I was quitting permanently they'd only get 2 weeks.

Is anyone else going through this? Chat Icon

Re: Comments from boss?

I have been at my job for 12 years. Ever since I told my boss he has been mean to me. I am having a really hard time with it. I always had a good relationship with him and I feel like he is acting out. I am taking 12 weeks leave, but will be looking for a job after that. I am disgusted by it and we shoudl not be treated this way because we can have babies. Its not right. Good luck and go to HR if you feel that you need to. I did the same as you 5 months notice and am coming back.

That's completely wrong. You are entitled to that time; don't ever feel bad. I would definitely go to HR if I was treated that way.

My boss has been amazing. She has been nothing but supportive! All bosses should be this way!

Don't people understand, life isn't all about work and you have the right to pro-create?

My boss told me "Don't get married or have babies during tax season".

yeah dude, because life works around tax season.

Don't sweat it. I would ignore it - unless it really continues and gets worse. Chat Icon

Ugh! It is annoying and just plain rude. I remember getting comments for taking a long honeymoon. Chat Icon
I don't remember them being too bad with maternity leave with DS.

Now that I'm in NJ I'm looking to get the extra 6 weeks and taking off 18 weeks all together. I haven't even said anything to my manager.
When she brings something up I just say I'm taking all the time I'm allowed.

For now I avoid it.
I'd just ignore. You'll be away from work and it will be the last thing on your mind when you're on leave. You are allowed the time and just work with HR and your insurance company.

Re: Comments from boss?

That is horrible of him to say. I would definitely mention it to HR. I'm leaving my current job because of things that went on and continue to go on as a result of my last pregnancy. I should've gone to HR a long time ago.

what an A HOLE!! I would make it a point to say that "I gave you 5 months notice" in a sarcastic tone. Don't take it from jerks like him. I hate people who make employees feel guilty for putting their life first. I had a psycho boss like that.. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would go to HR. That's absolutely uncalled for.

Re: Comments from boss?

you know...thats just wrong. with comments like that I'd turn around and say "well if you paid me a ton more...maybe it'd be worth me putting my life on hold...but until then...YES I will need time off...if it's a problem I'd be glad to speak to HR about it on your behalf"

Yes!

I'm starting a new job with a couple of people I've been woking with here occasionally.

Two of the 4 people are gone in august so I said ok I will start 4 weeks after my due date to help you out. Well they asked for more hours and when I mentioned I can do it but have a backup plan in case I have an emergency c section, everyone got all scared.

So I said I was doing them a favor starting early, most people take 12 weeks, not 4. And therefore to relieve anxiety about my uncertainty my new start date is 10 weeks after my due date bc if I go 2 wks late ad have a csection this is the minimum recuperation time.

Re: Comments from boss?

I would probably say something to my boss, but I am just basing that on my relationship with my boss. I can say anything to them. Luckily both of them are very supportive and actually have a countdown going for when the LO arrives, they are so excited, but if they ever said things like that to me then I would say exactly what you said before. "You had 5 months notice that I will be taking maternity leave and I will only be out for 12 weeks, if I was quitting you would have only had 2 weeks notice", or "why don't we get things done now that need to get done rather then focusing on my time off". Obviously you can say it nicer, but maybe rather then going to HR you can politely say something to him.
