Church for Baptism
The church DH and I were married in, the church I made most of my sacraments in as a child, has a rule that if a godparent is married, they must have been married in a Catholic church. This just eliminated ALL of our choices for godfather because they were all married at their halls. I'm really dissapointed.
Any suggestions? We're on the south shore of Suffolk. My mom mentioned that we're supposed to baptize our child in the church we plan on raising them in, but me and my two brothers were all baptized in different churches based on where my parents were living at the time.

Re: Church for Baptism
I've never heard this. I've been a godparent twice and I never had to fill anything out that I had been married in the Church.

My aunt works within the DRVC and apparently it depends on the pastor each particular parish. I called them and they told me that if our godparents are married it has to have been in the Catholic church. So my brother, our best guy friend, and my cousin wouldn't be eligible. DH has three sisters, all unmarried.

honestly i would just go to another church. id rather have the baptism at another church then to go through the hassle of trying to find replacements when you already picked who you want as your baby's godparents. I think the chosen godparents are more important than the specific church the baptism takes place.

Re: Church for Baptism
Oh wow, I figured they'd have to be Catholic.. but why wouldn't that be enough to have been baptized & confirmed? I guess I'm going to have an issue with this as well.
How annoying. I hope you are able to find somewhere else close so you can keep your original godparents

Our church has the same rule. Since DH's 3 sisters aren't married then the rule doesn't apply to them so you can choose one of them for the godmother.
Are you looking for recommendations of other churches?

Godmothers we have plenty! But this rule eliminated every choice for godfather.
If you have a recommendation that would be wonderful!

Re: Church for Baptism
We are baptising DD at St. Jude in Mastic Beach and they seem very laid back. The godparents are going to be my sister and BIL who were not married in a church and BIL isnt even catholic. The only rule they seem to have is that if the godparents are catholic they have to have made their confirmation. Im guessing only one has to be catholic and be confirmed. HTH!

We plan on baptizing the baby at St. Joseph's in Babylon. I'm not sure what their rules are yet.

Re: Church for Baptism
sorry to crash but I read your post and my church is United Methodist. We do like people who want to raise their children in our Church to have their baptism with us. But I do not believe we turn anyone away.
Plus we are only 1/2 mile down the road. lol Good Luck!

Re: Church for Baptism
I have never heard of this. I know that at least 1 godparent has to be "active in their faith" and have made all of their sacraments. The other person can be considered a "witness" if they are not Catholic. Never saw them ask for proof of marriage on a form...
Definitely call and talk to other churches...

Aaah, gotcha!!
Well since you're in the BayShore area I just wanted to mention that there's St. Luke's and St. Anne's in Brentwood. Not sure what their rules are.

Re: Church for Baptism
DH and I are godparents to our friend's child. They never had to prove that we were married in the church, although we were. The Baptism was at St. Joseph's in Bablyon if that helps.

Re: Church for Baptism
Technically the church only requires 1 godparent....so as long as the godmother reaches the requirements then it shouldnt be an issue.
I was godmother to my nephew - the godfather wasnt Catholic - he was Lutheran but again they only need 1 actual godparent.
I would double check with the church that if the godmother is ok then it doesnt matter who you pick for godfather.
