Shingles vaccine and being around kids
My mom decided to get the shingles vaccine today not knowing she cant be around my kids now. Neither of my kids have had the chickenpox or gotten the chickenpox vaccine.
Her dr said to stay away from them for a couple of days. My ped said she can't be around them for at least a week Beside everything I am going through with DS right now I am even more stressed because she and my dad watch my kids 2 days a week while I work and my mom take DS to therapy for me.
Has anyone else heard of this with the shingles vaccine?

Yes, my MIL got it. And after she got it she was not allowed to come over for a while because of our DC. Can't remember how long, though.

My mothers doctor should have asked more questions before giving her the vaccine. My dad doesnt think he ever had the chicken pox either so now he is at risk too. This is a mess.
Do you think she can come around my kids by next week?

My MIL is just getting over the shingles..she's not been around DD for a good 3 weeks and honestly I'd prefer longer but I remember her saying after a week she should be fine (she's a nurse) and wouldn't jeapordize DD or me who is pregnant

The doctor should have definitely asked your mother more questions...
I'm sorry!
If your ped says after a week it's safe, I'd trust that.

Now I'm freaking out because TJ got the MMR last Monday and it's a live vaccine but Derek doesnt have the vaccine Although they say the MMR doesnt "shed".

Re: Shingles vaccine and being around kids
If it will make you feel any better, my DS got the chickenpox vaccine AND the MMR when my DD was just an infant... under 6 months I think. The ped knew this and still gave me the ok to vaccinate.
She wasn't worried at all about the MMR, and regarding the chickenpox, she said the key was to keep DS in long sleeves for the next week to make sure the injection site was covered, because a chicken pox blister COULD form at the injection site and DD could possibly contract chicken pox by coming into contact with the blister (so if DS scratched/touched the blister and then touched toys, etc)
Ultimately there was no reaction at the injection site, so everything went smoothly with both vaccines.

Agreed! They should always ask if children, elderly, or people who never got the virus are going to be in close quarters. Wait a full week.. i'm paranoid ab those things bc I got shingles from a coworker who had chickenpox and I was almost hospitalized.
