Chubster preggys.. Question
My dr mentioned that it takes longer to see what you're having when you're overweight.. but I know many people who are larger than I am or around my size who found out as early as 12-16 weeks.
I am now 16 weeks and I have an appt with a sono tomorrow.. I went 2 weeks ago and the sonographer said "we probably won't be able to see so I won't check" I was kinda annoyed but didn't say anything. They spent time measuring EVERYthing on the babies, hands, legs, head, cord, membrane and it's surprising that they couldn't see if there was a lil weenie or not.
Question is - do you think that tomorrow (if the babies are cooperating) I should be able to find out? DH really wants to come to the appt but would have to take 1/2 day at work and miss a meeting, and I don't want him to do that unless chances are good that I can find out.
SORRRRRY my post was so long, and thanks in advance for any help or advice!

Re: Chubster preggys.. Question
Your weight has nothing to do with why the tech didn't check at 14 weeks. At that point, babies have just barely developed those organs yet, so the chance of a wrong reading is really high. The machine just may not have been all that great or that tech is just not confident enough in his/her skills to want to give you a guess. Better to not guess than to guess wrong that early on.
I didn't get a sono at my 16 w appointment. We found out the gender at 19 w 3 d.
They might try or they may tell you to wait for your anatomy scan at 20 weeks when they should be able to tell with 95%+ confidence. I only got a few sonos my whole PG, so DH came with me to all of them.

Re: Chubster preggys.. Question
Ive never heard that being chubby can prevent them from seeing the baby's sex.
I think if the tech looks they might be able to see but there are no guarantees. Good luck tomorrow

Re: Chubster preggys.. Question
I've never heard of that before. The sono tech offered to tell us at 15 weeks, bordering 16 weeks, but we didn't want to find out.

it's not about size -- it's about the cooperation of the baby (or babies).
i went for a sono at 15 wks and the tech could tell, but i didn't want to know. i'm also not a small chick.

Re: Chubster preggys.. Question
As far as I know...MOST techs/dr's will not attempt to guess or figure it out before your 20 week appointment....I didn't even think you COULD tell before 20 weeks until I read other posts on LIF.
Then I heard from my friend that they were wrong at her 16 week, told her it was a girl, and than at the next sono they saw it was actually a boy....

Re: Chubster preggys.. Question
12 to 16 weeks is early to find out. And a lot of tech's won't even look until the 20 week level 2 sono.
sure there are a few who will try early. but none that i've encountered. and trust me, i wanted to know early too!!!
personally i wouldn't have my heart set on finding out until the 20 week level 2 sono. that's more the norm.
i've also read that the margin for errors when looking that early is larger than if they checked later.
you can ask. but don't be surprised if they say no.. it's so common. thin or heavy.

Re: Chubster preggys.. Question
Thanks ladies!!
I never knew that it was an issue at all until my dr said it.. and I was kinda taken aback.. since then I've asked soooo many people and searched online on diff boards and everyone has pretty much said the same that it's about the babies and not really about my size.
I go to the hospital to the high risk dr to get sonos every 2 weeks so I think the machine is really good and I would think those techs know what they are doing.. so I guess we will see what happens.. I'm going to tell DH to go to work though and IF by chance I can find out I will ask them to write it down and not tell me.
You guys are the best

Re: Chubster preggys.. Question
I am considered overweight and was able to find out with DS at 20 weeks, this time with the twins at 17 weeks. And the sono tech had no problems getting a view of the goods (or lack there of)

Re: Chubster preggys.. Question
I'm overweight and I just found out at 18W.
When I had asked the sono tech to take a peek at 15 weeks she told me no. She said she would not be able to make an accurate guess and she didn't want to give me a % chance of what the baby is.

Re: Chubster preggys.. Question
Sorry, but your OB sounds like an a-hole. It is NOT an issue AT ALL. Many overweight women, as you can see by this thread, found out the sex when they were supposed to or even earlier. Your OB sounds full of $hit.

Re: Chubster preggys.. Question
It's totally not about your weight. I found out DS' s e x at 20 weeks but that's because I didn't have a sono betwen 12 w and 20w.

Re: Chubster preggys.. Question
You ladies are always so helpful, I love it!!!!
BTW.. we found out.. we are team..
The sonographer said she was over 80% sure.. and then had the dr come in to confirm. They both said they don't like to tell the patient they are 100% till after 20 weeks, but they were both extremely confident in their answer. They sealed it up in an envelope for me to open with DH, he was so cute he left work early once I told him I had the envelope and he was very excited!
We aren't telling anyone just yet, so please don't post on FB if you're on mine
