Talk to me about Beta's

I have lurked before and have heard ladies mention that their beta numbers were good. Can anyone explain to me what that means, and what a 'good' range might be? Is this something that the Dr will talk to me about at the first appt?

Betas are generally only drawn when a woman has had previous miscarriages, is considered high-risk, or saw a reproductive endocrinologist to get pregnant. Generally speaking, most women will not get a beta done if it is a "normal" pregnancy.

Hope that helps! Chat Icon

Re: Talk to me about Beta's

I am not high risk but my OB let me come in for a beta (which I requested) because we wanted to tell family at the holidays before my first appointment and wanted more confirmation.

I ended up getting a second beta too because my first beta came back "low" (it wasn't actually low, but they told me it was low because they were basing it off of LMP which I told them was not accurate - I was only 4w not 8w)

I agree with the others that you usually won't get a beta unless you have special circumstances although some practices will let you come in for one if you ask

It really just depends on your Dr's. The practice I use does a pregnancy blood test confirmation and beta levels as part of the inital missed period workup. I'm not high risk and I haven't had any previous losses.

Right - so generally speaking, most other ladies do not get betas - but there are always exceptions! Chat Icon Chat Icon
