I spent $125ish on my nephew's first birthday last year. It was a small toy and a check. That's pretty much what I plan to do going forward for him and my new niece.

I have 2 nieces (my sisters girls) and 1 nephew (on DH side). He buys for his nephew and I buy for the girls, one of which is also my goddaughter. I spent usually $75-$100 each. DH spends about $50.

I have 18 nieces and nephews and we dont do birthday gifts for them. It would get insane if we did, especially bc they live in another country and the shipping for a gift would be crazy too.

Now usually like $30 to $40
