Re: Do you need a permit...

Yes, and if it's not currently on the CO as living space be prepared to pay additional fees and required upgrades to make the space legal. We bought our house with half the basement finished but later found out they never had a permit and it wasn't listed on the CO. When we did other renovations they made us do what amounted to about $2300 in additional work to bring it up to code - self closing metal door separating it from the furnace, changes to the stairs, etc. And it clearly states that the only water in the basement is the washer/dryer (they are concerned about homeowners turning it into illegal apartments)

Ummm Yeah.
Thats a Queens thing too. Do it first, see what (if anything) happens later.
Unless a house was totally torn down,as in a McMansion... I am yet to see work permits in anyones window in my neighborhood.

That idea works for now but think about if you ever want to sell. Getting a CO is a pain in the arse!

From my experience you need a permit for anything on Long Island

My architect said he's seen building inspectors actually force people to take things down that were built without permits. On several occasions. It probably won't happen, but it definitely does happen.
