We are not going to do it for the reasons other posted listed, primarily the financial factor. I wish I could donate to a public bank, but the hospital I am delivering out doesn't do it.
ditto!

Re: Cord Blood Banking--Want Honest Opinions
What is the cost? We got info from our dr (all about the service they want us to go with - otherwise it is an extra $175!!! to collect) but of course the cost is not mentioned.
DH and I are on the fence with the info we have. No huge diseases run in our family, and i am guessing it is really pricey. And you just have to trust that the company is storing it right and under the right name, etc.
I have also heard that delaying the cutting of the cord is so so healthy for the baby, but I ma unsure how to get them to do so. Put it in my birth plan i guess.

We decided to let the blood reabsorb into DS by delaying the cutting of the cord for a couple minutes after his birth. Doing so actually protects him from many things that the banked blood could help treat, among other benefits. It's worth checking into if you are unsure.
How does this work and how do you go about doing this?
I have heard of this before, and would also like to know how to go about making sure the cord is not cut too soon...is this something you discuss with your Dr. ahead of time?? What if your Dr. is not there at the time of delivery?

You would need to speak with your doctor now AND at the time of birth. Tell them that you want to let the cord finish pulsating on its' own before it is clamped. In the case of an OB/GYN (vs. a midwife), you may need to remind him/her after your last push too. It's not very routine in that world and sometimes in the heat of the moment, habit and auto-pilot help drive their actions. There is a wealth of info on the web too. Good luck.

I don't have up to date costs, since I'm grandfathered in to the old rates 6 years ago, but the first year - collection, initial storage, etc is about $2000. After that there is an annual storage fee of around $100+.
