Cord Blood Banking--Want Honest Opinions

I am coming in to the home stretch and I need to make a decision as to whether or not I am going to privately bank the Cord or dontate to a public bank.

I would love to hear what you have decided and why.

TIA!

Re: Cord Blood Banking--Want Honest Opinions

we decided not to do it. .

while I totally don't judge anyone who does we thought it was not for us. . overall it's bc it was expensive and there was no guarantee that we would ever need it, and if so, if it would even work for our LO. . often the cord blood is good for others but not for the donor and it just didn't seem to make sense. Also, a lot of the advertising etc seemed to pray on pregnant women's fear/hormones etc when we are in that stage of being do willing to do anything for our LO's. . spoke to a few friends who were doctor's about it first. .

if money was not at all an issue we might have but I'm still not sure..

we did decide to donate though we did it too late and it didn't work out.

Re: Cord Blood Banking--Want Honest Opinions

We decided not to. We had a long talk with several doctors, and--although the idea of it is great--it's just not in our finances right now. I know if our Chat Icon ever gets sick, we'd be kicking ourselves for saying that, but it's extremely expensive. Also, you can only use it once. We were originally looking into it because we thought it might help DH when they get closer to a cure for type 1 diabetes...but he's obviously not going to take Chat Icon's cord blood if it can only be used once. Besides DH's diabetes, we both have really excellent family health history. If it was less expensive, we probably would have done it, but it's just too much for us at this moment.

ETA: Also, we would have donated the cord blood, but PA doesn't do cord blood donations! We were really surprised to find that out.

We decided not to for either of our girls.

I agree with everything the other girls have posted.

We however are still up in the air about donating.

we are most likely donating to a public bank. I feel private banking is no use to anyone.

Re: Cord Blood Banking--Want Honest Opinions

We decided to let the blood reabsorb into DS by delaying the cutting of the cord for a couple minutes after his birth. Doing so actually protects him from many things that the banked blood could help treat, among other benefits. It's worth checking into if you are unsure.

Re: Cord Blood Banking--Want Honest Opinions

We are not going to do it for the reasons other posted listed, primarily the financial factor. I wish I could donate to a public bank, but the hospital I am delivering out doesn't do it.

We did the same. If we'd banked it we would have donated it to the public bank, though.

I think cord blood banking is a great idea; that being said it is a huge investment for something that we may never use. I think that if I was independely wealthy I would consider it. However we are not finacially well off so we have decided to against it.

We banked both DS and DD's with CBR....On the fence about banking for baby 3 ( not sure if its overkill because of sibling compatibility)

When we originally banked with CBR, I was not aware about private banking so I cannot weigh in on that porton of your question as I lack knowledge there...

We banked because it was a once in a lifetime thing, and I never wanted to look back heaven forbid if anything were ever to happen to one of my DC's in the future that could have been cured by this...Technology in the medical world seems to be heading in that direction, so we made ourselves afford it and sort of counted it in (just like we did furniture etc...)

Praying that we never need it, but happy its there if ever they should....

Re: Cord Blood Banking--Want Honest Opinions

We decided to bank it.

We saw it as an "insurance policy" for our DS and possibly any future kiddos that may come along.

Also, having family members who have had illnesses that could have benefitted from the cord blood (had it been used back then) we just felt that banking it was the way to go for us.

We did for the same reason as Bops. We never wanted to think what if. It is an insurance policy I never plan on using. The initial cost is the same as our car insurance that I pay every year and I have no intention of using that either.

We also had a close family friend whose son was diagnosed with leukemia a few months before DS#1 was born. They did not bank, so it touched close at home for us.

My understanding was that if the child whose cord is banked gets sick with a disease like leukemia, the cord blood cannot be used for that child because it carries the same DNA make-up and therefore carries the leukemia cells.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

But what if #1 is healthy and #2 is sick? Or #3...

i guess if you are planning only one child - your decision might be different.

From what I understand if you bank #1 you can use it for #2 or #3 you just can't use #1 for #1.

Yes, but don't you have child #2 and child #3 right there in person for fresh marrow/blood cells to use anyway?

We are donating ours. We are not in the position to bank for our selves but I don't want to miss the opportunity to possibly help another family.

I agree.... I think that its expensive and the research is not enough... plus most of the time you cant use your saved cord blood on that kid.

Re: Cord Blood Banking--Want Honest Opinions

We didn't. We truly thought it over. When Isla decided to arrive we were undecided and the nurse sat down with us and explained the benefits etc... she let us know by the time we will use the cord the medical field would have advanced enough to whcih will prob will not have to use the cord. Plus she explained it will most likely benefit our future children. We decided not to save it.
