12 week ultrascreen questions
I just went for my 9.5 week check up at Dr. Pillitteri. I was told to schedule my 12 week ultrascreen with Dr. El Kady, a perinatologist. Is this normal? He didn't suggest anything is wrong at all. Also, the 12 week ultrascreen is just a really long sono, correct? and is it internal or external?

Re: 12 week ultrascreen questions
Ultrascreen is done anywhere from 11 weeks-13 weeks and 6 days. It is usually an external sono but if the technician is having trouble getting measurements I have heard they can do an internal but I think it is rare. Ultrascreen consists of a sono and blood test where they prick your finger.

Don't worry, it's a standard screening test.

Re: 12 week ultrascreen questions
Its the NT scan & bloodwork. Sometimes if your office doesnt have tech that can do the scan properly they will send you to the perinatologist.

Re: 12 week ultrascreen questions
Dr. Pillitteri doesn't do the ultrascreens so he sends his patients to the peri for them. I went to El Kady's office. You need to schedule it for between 12 weeks and something like 13 weeks 2 days or 4 days. They don't do them in the 11th week because they can't always get all of the measurements.
Make an appointment first thing in the morning otherwise you will wait like 3 hours. The first time I went my appointment was at 3:30 and I didn't get taken into a room until 6:30 and didn't leave until like 7:45. Now I make them for 9am and am always out by 10:30 the latest.
The NT scan includes a finger prick, internal, and external. El Kady's office always does an internal at every appointment. The sono itself was really cool. Mine was like 45 minutes long, maybe even longer than that. It's really cool watching the baby move around. We left with a lot of pictures as well.
Feel free to FM me if you have questions about El Kady's office. I've been there a few times this pregnancy.

Thanks Jen! I may be in for it...I made it during my February break (I'm a teacher), on the day i'm 12 weeks at 12:30. I hate waiting for sonos, as does everybody else. It makes me so anxious!!

Re: 12 week ultrascreen questions
I asked Dr. P about this, too, because I wasn't sure if I was considered high risk since he was sending me to a Peri-Natalogist. He told me he doesn't classify into normal and high risk... he just has everyone checked.
Well, thank GOD because after my PN appt with Dr. Kofinas' office this past Monday, I am now considered high risk since they see a lesion on my placenta and said I have a gene mutation for thrombophilia, which could cause blood clots.
I am so thankful that he sent me to to a PN because, apparently, what would make my particular circumstance most dangerous is if I didn't know or do anything about them. In this case, ignorance is NOT bliss.
By the way, I was warned about the loooooooong wait at Dr. El Kady, which was closer to our house, but would take more time since the wait would be forever. So we travel from Islip to Garden City for Kofinas instead. Dr. Kofinas is one of America's Top 10 doctors and Dr. P has his fullest trust in him and his "weathered eyes" to be able to see potential issues and treat them. Dr. Kofinas is actually out-of-network, but I am paying the out-of-pocket deductible and $20 each time I go - to know that I am in great hands.
FM me if you have any questions.
Good luck!!
ETA: the 12 week ultrascreen is blood work, an internal and an external sono. It was AMAZING. I'm so upset my DH couldn't go because we saw our baby in all his/her glory! Moving around, dancing, bopping, doing the Jersey fist pump. etc. It was amazing and I now, for the first time, really feel pregnant!!
