Boy Mommy's
Have you heard this before and how do you feel about it?
"A son is your son until he takes a wife but your daughter is your daughter the rest of your life"
This makes me a little sad I couldn't help feeling badly after hearing one friend tell another friend this recently (both have girls).

I hate that saying. You never know what the future holds, regardless of the sex of your children. I will do my best to make sure I'm a good mother, and a great MIL someday. That's all I can do!

Re: Boy Mommy's
yes MIL says it all the time, DH is her ONLY child. I sort of find it annoying, especially because I have a brother who is NOT by any means a mommas boy, but is also VERY family oriented and I can not see this being true. It is all in how you are raised IMO!

Re: Boy Mommy's
yeah i heard it from my MIL when my husband "disobeyed her wishes" over something ridiculous that didn't have anything to do with her (as a 27 yr old, married father.) Given the source, i can only .
I will be PROUD of my son when he marries and takes care of a spouse, starts a family, etc... it'll prove I raised him right.
eta: the very same woman also said that she was going to wear black on my wedding day because she was losing her little boy.

Re: Boy Mommy's
althouhg I have been thinking about this....do our views of our MIL's change once we have a son? can we understand them a little better now?
I feel like. I used to tell me MIL she was nuts b/c she still dotes on DH and BIL. but now, I totally get it. she just LOVES them. so much.

Re: Boy Mommy's
i don't believe it for my sons.....i feel like if i raise him right my future DIL's and grandchildren will be an extension of my family and a proof of my good work.
I hope to be a good mom to them as adults and a good MIL. I have to bring this up to my MIL, I don't think she would agree with the saying either. My hubby is still very close to his mom, and I know seeing him as a husband and father makes her very proud.

I was just thinking the same thing. Before my MIL passed away I used to think she was a little much with my dh and his brother but now I get it.

Mommy to 3 boys!

Re: Boy Mommy's
I kind of understand this, and I have 3 boys. It's a different type of relationship with mothers and daughters. NOT to say that mothers aren't close to their sons. It's just a little different, like I don't think boys call their moms every single day to bs when they are older, where for a grown woman it is not all that unusual to chat for an hour or so with their mom every day. I just can't see women going out shopping or something like that with their grown sons. Although, my MIL is always guilting my DH about stuff, and he is up her arse, but I so don't want to be that MIL that drives my future daughter in laws crazy when my sons get older!!

Re: Boy Mommy's
I just laugh. I am much more independent than my DH. I am "close" to my family but we see and talk to DH's family MUCH MUCH More than mine. And my ILs have 3 boys and they are all REALLY close to their family/parents.
Its not about gender its about personality, relationship, etc.
ETA: I just wanted to add, I am also very close to my ILs. Maybe its because my mom passed right after my wedding, I dont know. But I call my MIL every few days if she doesnt call me first. I talk to my one SIL every 2-3 days as well! We have kids the same age, we live near each other, we all vacation together (just went to disney for the 2nd time with ILs and this time my BILS family came too!)

Re: Boy Mommy's
Maybe those chicks were just consoling themselves about the fact that they don't have sons.
Personally, I think any gender-related stereotypes or antiquated "sayings" are usually pretty stupid. I am a very new boy mom, but had two girls first. Nearly all of my friends have boys and they were always coming out with some nonsense about being grateful they don't have daughters because of: boyfriends, skimpy clothing, slutty behavior, pregnancy, blah blah blah blah. So infuriating.
So you should have just turned to them and said, "Jealous?"
