hospital stay worry
As I was walking to work this morning I realized that while i have gone to the emergency room for an odd thing here and there I have never actually had to spend the night at a hospital and now i am starting to feel worried about that.
Is it scary to spend 2-3 nights at the hospital? Am I alone in this worry?

Re: hospital stay worry
I thought the same thing. I never been in the hospital for a night. Once when I was three I broke my fingers. Never had surgery or anything. I went from that to having a crash c-section, which mean anesthesia. Another thing I never had.
Totally fine! First night I was so out of it I passed out fast. DS was in the nursery. DH came first thing in the morning (I delivered at LIJ so no private rooms). Other than that I had company all day. DH was with me along with my parents, IL's, and then other visitors. It was nice to have quiet time at night with DH and the baby. He stayed till late then went home. One night I was fine with him going home so I could call my friends and send emails out. This time I'm delivering at a bigger hospital in NJ so looking forward to having a private room. THis way DH can sleep there if needed. He may not since we have DS.
ETA - you'll like the easy access to nurses with a push of a button and miss it when you leave

Re: hospital stay worry
You will be ok I only stayed over when I was younger, so my Mom stayed lol But I'm sure DH will be able to stay late, and then you will have feedings. There is always someone there to help. Don't worry!

Re: hospital stay worry
i actually had the same thought last night. I've NEVER been in a hospital - never broke a bone, had surgery, been ill. So, yeah, when I go into labor it'll be my first time. I think it helps to know that I'll have DH with me and my BABY GIRL (who I am soooo excited to meet!!!) I'm sure it'll be fine. New & different, but fine

Re: hospital stay worry
I was the same way. Heck I have never even had stitches until my c/s. I had only been to the hospital (for me) for a dog bite when I was like 20 and an incident when I was 2.
I was worried. But it really wasnt bad at all. And it went fast Actually in some ways as a first time parent its reassurign to be in the hosptial where there is always someone to help, reassure you, show you how to do something etc.
I stayed 3 nights. First night I was still doped up so I just slept. 2nd night I was tired so I slept well. 3rnd night I was wide awake at 4am, walkign the halls, texting just because I was bored.
I only had a roommate my first night so at night it was really quiet and relaxing. I slept well, knowing I had no idea what was in store when I got home and it was just DH and I!

Re: hospital stay worry
When I had DD I had never been in the hospital, other than to visit people. I was definitely a little bit worried. I ended up with a c-section, but everything was fine with the hospital stay. I stayed 4 nights and didn't want to leave! As someone else said, it was very reassuring having the nurses right there and it was nice having my all of my meals taken care of. There were none of the usual home distractions there (I didn't look around & feel guilty that I wasn't cleaning something.) I did BF, but they took DD for awhile every night & brought her to me when she needed to eat. I had a private room & private bathroom and DH stayed with me every night, but I think I would have been fine without him too. Alot depends on your personality. I'm pretty independent and sometimes I cherish the "alone time." I'm sure you'll be fine.

Re: hospital stay worry
I don't like hospitals, I spent way too much time as a visitor when my mother was there.
I would love to have my DH with me but not at 500 a night! Maybe I'll only have to sleep once there!

Re: hospital stay worry
I have to say I was really nervous about it when I was pregnant with DS but honestly it really wasn't bad at all... I left the lights on at all times along with TV and you have nurses bothering you all the time.

Re: hospital stay worry
I have thought the same thing. I have never had to stay overnight at the hospital. I know I will be fine during the day because DH and family will be there but I don't know how I will be when they leave at night..haha I wish DH could stay the whole time.

Totally not alone - I told this to DH and he has to stay with me or I am leaving the hospital. I am not a fan of having to stay there

Re: hospital stay worry
I've never stayed overnight at a hospital either...or had to go to the ER (knock on wood) but I'm not really nervous about it.
I'm trying to think of it like staying in a hotel! The part I'm looking forward to is when everyone leaves and it will just be me and DH alone with our LO, probably in complete and utter shock over having a child. And then when DH leaves, really being able to totally bond with the baby, just the two of us. Ohh I just got chills!

Re: hospital stay worry
I was really scared about it when pregnant with DS. Then at 33 weeks I got thrown into the hospital for evaluation when my BP spiked. Since then I haven't really cared.
My first roommate after DS was born was awesome. She had her c-section a full day before me so was up and walking around. She was so helpful for me. She would get me a binky, blanket, diaper, whatever I needed when I was still stuck in bed.
My second roommate wasn't as great. Kept the curtain closed the entire time. And she had so many visitors it gave me a headache. But I was only stuck with her for 1 day/night.

Re: hospital stay worry
I stayed in the hospital only one time before I had DD and I will tell you that being there for having a baby was way different then being there because you are sick. DH came to visit around 11am (even when there was 2 feet of snow) and stayed till 10pm. You will have visitors throughout the day and you wont be poked and prodded all day like you would be if you were there sick. I had my baby on a tuesday at 5:11pm and was discharged on Thursday at 11am. If I had a csection i would have had to stay 1 extra day. It goes fast so dont worry!

Re: hospital stay worry
'm starting to bug out a little because not only have I never stayed overnight in a hospital before (just a few ER visits for accidents, freak things, etc.), I have extreme hotel-phobia, and I can only imagine hospitals being 100x worse. I don't suppose they'll let me bring my own sheets, huh?

Re: hospital stay worry
I just recently stayed in the hospital overnight. It was weird! I had never been to the hospital other then to visit people prior to that so I thought it was strange the light was on the in hallway, which annoyed me. And I was bored, but I would imagine with a baby, you wouldn't be bored!

I'm with you, I've never had to stay overnight in a hospital either. So I'm also a little concerned with the whole thing; like I know I won't be comfortable there.

I thought it would be scary but honestly, I was so tired I just passed out and only woke up when the nurses came in to check me or feed DD. I really needed the sleep and didnt even remmeber at that point that I was scared! haha There is so much activity in maternity that it never seems like you are all alone anyway.

Re: hospital stay worry
I spent a week in the neurology unit at Manhasset in October. It's not scary just a little uncomfortable. The nurses come in all hours to take your blood pressure and bloods so you won't sleep too much at night. I've been told the maternity ward is similar in that respect. Just hope you have either no roommate or a nice one with nice and good nurses and you will be fine!
