Road trip to Cape Hatteras. Anyone have any idea where to stop on the way?

We are planning to drive down for a family reunion during the summer. I want to break it up. Can anyone recommend a place to stay on the way? Thanks so much

my parents own a vacation house down there! you'll LOVE it- soo relaxing!!
we usually just drive straight through when we go, takes about 9-10 hours from our house in morris county, nj.... we get up and leave around 4 AM, and get down there in the afternoon, just in time to check into the house and have an hour or so of beach time
but if you are going over the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel in MD/VA i think there are a couple hotels right around there. theres also VA Beach... but not sure if the hotels there would rent rooms for just one night during summer season.
what you DON'T want to do is take I-95 down!! theres another way to take through delware (rt. 1, 13,113). I just do it by feel, but i can get you exact directions if you need them have an awesome trip!!
