Neighborhoods in Queens
My nephew is choosing between 2 apartments in Queens. One is in Rego Park and the other is in Woodhaven. Any thoughts on these areas?

I think Rego Park is nicer and more convenient depending on where.

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens
Rego Park ...
#1 Transportation - the Queens Blvd Subway line --- 20-25 minute commute into Midtown #2 Shopping from Supermarkets to Bakeries to Bed Bath & Beyond and Restaurants to the Queens Center Mall, the convienence of the area cannot be beat. #3 Doorman Buidings - many of the buildings in Rego Park have Dorman and/or Security.
There are parts of Woodhaven that are beautiful and good areas ... but, the train access is the liberty Ave line which runs to downtown manhattan and it runs through some really rough neighborhoods in Brooklyn.
If the prices are comparable, I would choose Rego Park definitely ...

actually depending on where it is in Woodhaven it's probably the J train which runs off of Jamaica (the Liberty Ave train is the A which technically runs through Ozone Park).
Woodhaven by Forest Park isn't bad but then you're relying on bus service to get you around if commuting into NYC. I'd vote Rego Park though since overall it's more convenient (especially if you don't have a car, parking stinks over there)
do you have more specific info (cross streets) on where your nephew is considering?

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens
We lived in Rego Park for 4 years and I miss it.
You can park on the street pretty easily, some buildings have garages.
You can't beat the proximity to subways/manhattan. Also it is walking distance to Austin Street for restaurants, shopping, etc.
Rego park has its own good restaurants too.
It is a very family oriented place, during warmer months, you regularly see entire families out walking around as late at 10 pm or later. Very safe location.
Don't know anything about woodhaven but I really liked rego park.

The J runs through East New York, which isn't the nicest area either. And after 7 or so it runs skip stop service into Manhattan, which is a PITA, especially when it's really cold. I would definitely chose Rego Park over Woodhaven.
