Winthrop Ladies - private rooms...apparently not just rumor!

I asked my (new) OB today if he could confirm the rumor of Winthrop going to all private rooms. He said 90% of the time patients do not share rooms. He said of course there are circumstances where lots of babies are born they will double up but overall it isn't very common. Plus he said, since I am having twins I will more than likely have my own room regardless Chat Icon

I hope to be solo this time around. My roomate wasn't terrible last time, but she complained a lot....I had the same surgery, she was a tad dramatic. And her visitors had to peek over to my side everytime to see who was in there, that was annoying. This time DD will be coming up to visit and I don't want her to annoy anyone elseChat Icon So I hope to be solo.

Just so you know, i had twins too and EVERYONE and their mother gave birth on 12/2 when i had my twins. I shared a room the first 2 nights and then got my own room nights 3-5. So if they are really busy, you will share, but the nurse did tell me for the most part, they are trying to accommodate private rooms.

DH works at Winthrop. He found out for me that private rooms are given out when possible - they put everyone in a room alone, and then double up when they need to. They "need to" most of the time, but not all. It depends how busy they are.

Priority for singles go to women who have had C-sections - women who have vag births are doubled up first.

If you really want a private room I would pay for the definite single occupancy. I really wanted one so DH could sleepover since I have a heart condition and was scared to be alone. The floor was totally full when I was there in Sept and everyone was doubled. When my sister delivered in Nov she was a single in a double room.

That's good! So are there showers in each room, or do they adjoin other rooms?

For me I mostly just want my own bathroom and shower.

I had ds at LIJ, I was in a double and the bathroom was in between ours and another double, so there were 4 to a bathroom.

Then I had dd at Huntington and there they had bathrooms in the room, but the showers were in the hall Chat Icon

That would be awesome! I had a private room for DS #1. We paid for it and it was SO worth it! I had a shower in my bathroom in the room.

Unless they changed there rules, even if you had paid for the room your DH wouldn't have been able to stay. I delivered there in '06 and '07 and both times DH wasn't aloud to sleep over.
Also, the earliest I was able to reserve the room so I could pay for it was when I admitted into L&D. Even then they couldn't guarantee me a private room.

Each room has a bathroom regardless if it is a double or single.

Re: Winthrop Ladies - private rooms...apparently not just rumor!

i hope you get lucky and get the private room .

for me, it must have been busy in april last year because they would NOT give me a private room because i had one baby in the NICU and the other with me.. it made NO sense at all.. and they even had a private room available. so i had to stay 2 nights with a roomate. it was awful.
so finally they gave me the private room the last 2 nights.
and my other DS was still in the nicu.. i was so mad!!!

i wish all hospitals had private rooms!

im not sure how accurate that statistic is ...

when I delivered in May, there were no private rooms available. luckily, i requested one as soon as I walked in the door (i was having a csection) and I got it on my second day there.

i believe ALL rooms had more than 1 mommy the entire time I was there. maybe it was just a busy time of year Chat Icon

That is really great news especially since I paid about 600 dollars each time with the boys.

I had a private room both times, and the husbands are not allowed to stay past the normal visiting hours for dads, which was about 10pm.

i just had my baby there on 1/13 and i had to share a room because there were so many people......they also changed the visiting rule....it used to be only 2 people at a time....now all are allowed.....i really didn't like it cause the baby was exposed to many people and i felt really overwhelmed.....but the nurses are great

They didn't put anyone in the other bed, I had a bathroom in my room but had to use the showers in the hallway.
