Do waiters prefer cash tip or the tip put on credit card?
Does it make any difference?
I always leave cash, because I figure they want it that night, but do they even get it right away?
Anyone know?

Depends on the restaurant. But Most ppl I know would rather get cash.

It doesnt matter, at the end of the night when they close out the cc machine, waiter/tress get the cash anyway.

We always try to leave cash tip since I've heard stories of restaurant managers keeping the credit card chargeback amount of out the server's tip, which I think is petty.

I think any waiter will always prefer cash. 
But when I was one, all I cared about was that you left me one, didn't bother me whether it was cash or not.
At the end of the night when you claimed your tips for the shift, the cardinal rule that most everyone followed was roughly 10% of your sales or at the very least what your credit card tips came to at the end of the night.

if they get credit card tip, they have to claim it on their taxes. cash tips can be fudged a little.
correct me if im wrong, this is what i've been told...

Plus, the restaurant has to pay around 4% of all transactions they submit through the c/c's so I am sure they would like to avoid that extra fee also!

This is true!
ETS: Restaurants prefer it too because they're taxed on all money used on the CC but if it's a cash tip, they're not.

DH worked as a waiter for a brief period of time while in college & he siad he preferred cash tips since he basically got paid in peanuts.

This is true... DH worked for a place that did that...
Also, DH says some places will deduct a "service fee" from the waiters CC tips to off set the CC service fee they pay too..
DH is a waiter/manager of a restaurant and he always prefers to get cash tips, and we always leave tips in cash as well.

That's correct for any tip job! Tips show up on your paystub and are taxed automatically.
Cash..well, it's cash!

this is all accurate... tips left on a credit card are always taxed as income.. and SOME restaurants charge the wait staff a "Service fee" to offset their costs from the CC companies...
i will always try to tip in cash if possible..

I got this in a forward.....
Just another friendly tip as an ex server (although looks like after this baby is born, i might have to get a part time serving job) as far as the cash/credit tip thing goes. for YOUR sake, try to tip cash. if you do tip in credit, make sure you write the $ RIGHT next to the amount and ALWAYS take the guest copy. I have seen some shady *** **** where servers will change the tip amount or if you leave the guest copy, they'll say that the guest left that copy and took the merchant copy and will fill in whatever they want for tips. just be careful out there!

yes - this is what happened to me when we would get a CC tip. It depends if you want to keep them honest or not

I always try to tip in cash. Where I worked it would get settled at the end of the night, so I'd get the cash, and then claim 10% of my sales or what my CC tips were (if it was a higher figure) when clocking out. But I've had friends work in a few other places and they've had the end of week payout or the fee taken out of their tips.
