Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?

Erik & Derek are cousins...that their names are close didn't even occur to me until my FIL started mixing them up.

(Derek is my SIL's son - he's 10 years older. My bad.)

I also have two cousins named David (their fathers are brothers).

My daughter and my niece share a middle name (after my MIL)

I would talk to your sister about it, but it doesn't seem like a big problem.

I wouldn't care, per say, but I'd wonder why, out of all the names in the world, my sister chose a name SO close to my own kid's name.
But that's just me. If you love the name, then go for it. It's not like they're going to grow up going to the same school and in the same circle of friends, ya know?

TBH, the fact that you're asking and sensing that it may be an issue, sounds to me like if the tables were turned...it would bother you. For that reason, I wouldn't do it. There are a gazillion names out there. Like another poster said, if it were a distant cousin or something who cares....but this is your sister. It sounds to me like you already know it would bother her and are just looking for everyone to tell you to do it anyway. jmhoChat Icon Chat Icon

I agree...if it's spelled this way, it's much less of an issue. IMO

Good Luck, it sux that this has to be a stresser for you.

Good point about the spelling. Cian definitely looks different than Kieran regardless of the pronunciation.

I agree.. Spelling it Cian makes a huge difference IMHO.

As far as pronunciation goes... My name was the #2 girls name the year I was born and somehow people STILL butcher it! I especially love when people attempt to spell it (the way I spell my name is the most "basic" form) Chat Icon

More often than not in life you will verbally introduce yourself before someone were to read your name on a piece of paper. Other than job interviews and the first day or school not many people will have opportunities to see your name before meeting you so I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?

My sister named her first daughter something that rhymes with my oldest daughter's name. We live 6 hours apart....if we saw each other all the time, I would probably have questioned it, but it doesn't bother me.

The girls' names I'm talking about are so close that if they were sisters, people would roll their eyes at how rhyme-crazy they are Chat Icon
