Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?

My sister named her son Kieran - he was born this summer. My son is due in the spring so the two cousins will be almost a year apart. I live in NYC and my sis lives in NJ. We don't see each other everyday but often enough for our kids to know each other.

DH and I love the Irish name Kian. It's pronounced Key-in. It's basically Kieran without the r. If your son was named Kieran, would it upset you in anyway for your sister to name her son Kian? The two kids will have different last names.

I don't want to ask my sister because I don't want her telling the whole family the name. And also, if I did ask, I think she would say she were ok with it to be polite. But I'd never really know.

That's a bit too close.

How would you feel if it was reversed? That's how I would approach it.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?

I see no issue with it.

My cousin's son is nicknamed JR. AJ and JR confused the family for a bit. Especially since originally AJ was going to be JR (Jezebel Rose).

Family got used to it.

But then again I come from a hispanic family where Maria, John, are VERY common and almost every branch of the family has one. My step mother named every child of hers with a Pat in it as did her sisters (to honor their father) so I've seen other cases with similar sounding if not indentical names.

Thanks Ladies. We are also considering Keelan (which is pronounced like Kieran but with an L instead of R).

Well, my son's name IS Kieran and I don't think it's a big deal! I really like the name Kian too (although I've usually seen it spelled Cian). I also think Keelan is great. I think it could be slightly confusing for other kids in the family when they are young, but I don't think it would be a big issue, and that would obviously pass after a few years.

Depends on your relationship, if my sister named her son, the same name as mine, I'd have no issue what so ever. And we see each other every day. But we are both really easy going when it comes to stuff like that.

But I think if a not so close family friend did it, I'd be a little more annoyed.

I think it just depends...

Not super close - we don't talk on the phone or anything. She's got 3 kids and is super busy. We see each other on holidays and some random weekends only. We also really like the name Keelan, which is similar but not as close to Kian.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?

I grew up in a family with 7 Franks, & 6 Anthonys... All cousins / 2nd cousins.

I named my son Anthony, My DH's name is Anthony & so is my father.

Just the norm in my family...

Would it upset me if my brother named his kid Antonia or Antonella? Absolutely not!

However, some people might get upset about it. You cant please everyone. Its YOUR kid. Do what you please.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?

Yes. It would annoy me a little, it is just to close. There are so many names out there! It is going to be hard to distinguish who you are calling when together. If your sister is calling (or yelling) at her son it may sound like your sons name.

Even if it doesnt bother you or your sister, it might bother the boys as they get older.

My name is Gina and my sister is Dana and when our parents would call us - we never knew who they were talking to and would both answer. We only heard the /na/ sound

It would annoy me. My dd's name is Annabella. Before my SIL found out the sex of her 2nd I found out the name they were going to use if it was a girl was going to be anna-something as well...it ended up being a boy...and even if it was a girl I don't think they cared what i thought anyway and I wouldn't/couldn't stop them anyhow...but it annoyed me.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?

To be honest I think Kieran and Keelan are more similar than Kieran and Kian or Cian.

If it was me I would go with Cian. I love the name Cian.

To be perfectly honest I would be upset more so because its your sister... If it were a friend or distant cousin - then I would say who cares. But I would be annoyed if my sister named her child pretty much the same name or one letter off. Sorry!

I feel you should name your child whatever name you like. :o) I would have no issue with my sister naming her child a name similar to my daughter's. Have you discussed this with your sister?

I agree...if it's spelled this way, it's much less of an issue. IMO

Good Luck, it sux that this has to be a stresser for you.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?

Some people get funny about this, but I really don't think it's s big deal.

My son's name is Luke and my DH's nephew is Lucas.. I love the name too much to care about what other people are named.
