Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?
My sister named her son Kieran - he was born this summer. My son is due in the spring so the two cousins will be almost a year apart. I live in NYC and my sis lives in NJ. We don't see each other everyday but often enough for our kids to know each other.
DH and I love the Irish name Kian. It's pronounced Key-in. It's basically Kieran without the r. If your son was named Kieran, would it upset you in anyway for your sister to name her son Kian? The two kids will have different last names.
I don't want to ask my sister because I don't want her telling the whole family the name. And also, if I did ask, I think she would say she were ok with it to be polite. But I'd never really know.

I'm sorry, this is really just my own opinion, but I wouldn't even consider a name that close to my nephew's. I'm very close with my sister and I wouldn't put her in a position to have to tell me if it bothers her or not.

Yeah - that was my initial feeling too but just wanted to hear someone else say it! Kieran was our #1 choice for a baby but she had her son before me so there was nothing I could do (I never told anyone we wanted Kieran).
We're not super close but not estranged either.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?
if you're really set on the name, how about using it as the middle name?
it could cause confusion and your sis might be bothered by it.... jmo....

We don't do middle names in my family.

Ladies - does Keelan sound too much like Kieran? It's using an L instead of the R.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?
Awh- tough one. I think if the same sounded alike, but wasn't Kieran w/out the "r" I'd still go for it. I'd say it's really close though.
I wanted Kellen or Casey.. .love those names too.
DH and I originally had Ryan picked out for a boy. We had a girl, and his brother had a boy. They named his Ryan. This baby, DH suggested Brian, and I thought he was nuts! It's to close, even though they live in MA and we only see them 5x's a year!

when all is said and done, it's your baby so you and DH need to be happy w/ the name.
why not just bite the bullet and ask your sister?

I probably would not, although I love the name.
What about Keenan OR Kellan?

Keelan is our second choice. So to avoid controversy, we may go with that....

To me it would be too close and I wouldn't do it. My neice is Allison and I love the name Alyssa for a girl but even think that is too close and won't consider it.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?
I think they're too much alike. But i'm the type of person who does not like repeat of names in families - I know some people don't mind it (like with traditions and all). To me those 2 names just sound like the same name and I feel like without a nickname or using initials it would be super confusing.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?
Its tough bc you want to be able to name your baby whatever you want but honestly I think I would be a little upset with my sister if she chose a name very similar to my son's name. Then again, its something I would get over pretty quickly I think.

I'm sure I'm the minority but I have a cousin with the same name as me--I don't care, she doesn't care, and there isnt ever any confusion.

yeah they are kinda close... i originally like riely but my nephews name is ryan and i thought they would both be ry...and that would be too close.
if you are really conflicted about this, then i would suggest finding another name...you might find one you like even more

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?
Well, I have an older cousin with the same name as me- which is kinda wierd. We are ten years apart and she lives in another country. My mother always wanted to name me Adriana, so she didnt care that my father's brother's daughter had the same name.
AND I have a much younger cousin named Andrea, when my aunt named her she said she wanted her to be just like me! Which was the ultimate compliment!
I guess if you guys LOVE the name then name him what you want--its your child! I'm sure the family wont mind and just dieal with it.

I would be upset, only because: a) i'm sensitive about naming stuff, and b) it sounds like your nephew already has a pretty unique name--that she wanted to make sure he didn't have a name similar to anyone else. I could be totally wrong though as I do not know your sister!

Kiran is a very popular Indian and Irish name. So in our world, it's not that unique.

I have to agree - I don't have the same name as anyone in my family, but I do come from a HUGE family and their are multiple people with the same names and no one minds. DH and I were thinking about using James and we already have 1 cousin Jimmy and another cousin James and both of them loved that we were thinking about using that name. As far as immediate family, I can't speak for my sister or brother, but I know for a fact DH and I would not mind at all if they picked a name close to our child’s.

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?
I have cousins with the same name, I don't ever remember anyone saying anything about it, and I never thought twice about it myself. In my opinion, if you have your heart set on a name for your child, than that is what you go with, reguardless of other people's opinions. If someone chose the same, or a similar name to what I chose for my child, I wouldn't be upset or offended in anyway. Your child is the most important thing in your life, you shouldn't have to compromise on what to call him/her because of the name someone else chose.

I wouldn't really care. I don't see why you cant choose something that you love just because someone else just so happened to get it first... thats just my opinion though

Re: Would this upset you (re: similar sounding baby names)?
I always loved the name Leila for a little girl, and everyone knew that...well lo and behold, my older sister named her daughter Lila.
Now that I am pregnant, I won't even consider a name so close.
You will find another name you both love.
