Checking out a contractor????
Besides BBB is there a way to check them out, like call the lic. dept etc...TIA

Ask for references.
ETA: And do drive-bys of the homes they have worked on. That's what we did when we did major construction.

The department of Consumer Affairs in each county can tell you if a contractor is licensed and insured and if they have any complaints against them.
I agree with verifying the references they give. Call the other customers & ask about their work.

Make sure they're licensed and insured (verify this). Ask to see their portfolio. Ask for several references and go look at the finished product. Make sure your bid is detailed and doesn't just have a price. When the job is in progress and changes are to be made, be sure to get the change orders in writing that includes additional cost.
90 percent of our business comes from referrals. Ask your friends who they used and whether or not they were happy.
