Latest Craigslist Scam...
Some of you may remember that I was selling some of my camera equipment on Craigslist....
I was lucky enough to sell the lens to one of our very own LIFers...
The camera was still listed on Craigslist and I got an inquiry asking me if it was still available. To which I responded "yes"...
This is the response that I received....
Please note that I am NOT going to be doing any business with this person. I just wanted to pass this along. I additionally was hoping to have someone shed some light on how this type of scam works.
Greetings,
I have concluded with my Intructors on buying the Camera Equipment / Accessories, i sent your ad details to him and he so much love it, he also believes it will be a good instrument for beginners in my new photo editting studio class opening on february. What is your final price? My only hope is just for the item to be as good as speculated, Sending more pictures will be awesome though.
I would have been happy to travel down for the pickup and take a glance on the item or pay via PayPal since my class will be starting anytime soon, but due to circumstances beyond my control, that wont be possible because I'm kinda busy with a project that was awarded to me which have taken me out of home for the past few weeks . Due to this present project which am running from an off-site where access to cash is denied i wont be able to pay you with cash ,but i will pay you with a certified money order, which you can get cashed at your bank. You can hold on to the equipment until the you have successfully cashed the money orders at your bank so as to clear any doubts.
In response to that, how will you want your name filled on the money orders? Kindly write back to me With your Full Name.
Kindly get back to me with your valid cellphone number as well so i can reach you later.
Your quick response will be appreciated so i can instruct my secretary to send your payment immediately and also alert my shipping agency to be ready for pick-up since my classes will be starting soon.
Note that my shipper will be coming for the pick-up after you must have successifully received and cashed the money order at your bank.
Waiting impatiently to hear back from you with your Full Name and Cell phone Number.
Regards
Dave Conor 404-424-4685
NB: You can always drop a voicemail if i am not on sit to pick up your call.

Re: Latest Craigslist Scam...
as far as how it works, the bank would take the money order, and then it will turn out to be fake, and you will be responsible for the amount. I believe you could theoretically take the "money order" to the bank and have them verify it first before putting it into your account (some websites recommend this) but not in this case. I love how he opens it with "greetings!"

Honestly I think this is something else....
I think they want to run up my Cell Phone # in some way....
I just read the email to my DH and the minute I said "Greetings" he rolled his eyes..

Re: Latest Craigslist Scam...
This happened to me. Got the money order and everything. Called the bank because I was pretty confident it was a scam and they asked for the routing number. It was a fake. Thankfully I realized it was a scam and never sent the item I was selling.

Re: Latest Craigslist Scam...
it's the same basic scam. They are just adding some sob-story related to the nature of the item to think it's sincere.
Fraudulent money orders are hard for even a bank to spot. So, the bank may tell you it's good, but when they put it through the system, it will come back as a fraud and you have to re-pay it.

Re: Latest Craigslist Scam...
this happened to my brother about 2 months ago. The bank cleared it (my brother even waited a few days). The bank said they cleared it "in good faith" (i'm honestly not kidding when I say that) I felt awful for him but at the same time was baffled how he had never heard of the scam.

That is EXACTLY what happened to DH's aunt. I believe she was selling a piece of furniture. In the end she was out about $1500.

Honestly I think there is a different twist on this one. He says that I can wait until it clears my bank....so technically I could wait 2 weeks right?
From what Im reading online....this is different although I cant find the exact wording any where. I think they actually put fraudulent charges on your cell phone or something.

Honestly....
I dont need it...
I had the opportunity to purchase a barely used D3. For the price I simply couldnt pass it up.
Im friendly with a few commercial photographers who have been in the business for 20+ years. They all told me to go for it. (One was actually my lead on the camera)...
Id rather spend my money on some new lenses than save up for a camera that will be God knows how much when it's released. (The D3s alone is $5500 and the D3x is $8000, so I can just imagine what the D4 is going to be)
For my kind of work I dont need more than 12MP. Im not going to blowing up my work in Times Square...KWIM?
Now with all of that said the ISO settings in the rumored D4 could be so amazing that I may just be forced to change my mind at some point....
