Are snow quads legal on main roads?
These things:
They look fun, but I saw a group of 7 of them being ridden on Middle Country Rd.
Thankfully, everyone had on helmets.
Anyone know?

No, not legal anywhere on Long Island. My brother has one and has been caught more than once.

Is there anywhere you can ride them legally in NY, if not on LI, but upstate? They look like a lot of fun. Is it something you can rent out at a ski resort type of place?

My DH saw one on the side of the road and the guy was laying on the ground. He got hit by a truck. The truck was pulled over on the side of the road also. DH stopped to help them. The guy on the quad got lucky he only had a broken arm..

oh you can def rent them upstate. that's where I always rode them. them and snowmobiles.
i'm not sure about where they are legal... but I do think some parts of upstate.. or perhaps on your own land upstate. I'm really not positive how that works.

There are some motocross tracks out east that occasionally open up for quads. Unfortunately, it's expensive to get access to the tracks. The landowners charge a lot because they can and because the liability insurance is  .
Some quads have headlights and turning signals. They are legal in event of state of emergency.

I am upstate and I know A LOT of my students ride four wheelers, but I am not sure where. I live in a pretty suburban area, so most of them do not have an enormous amount of land. I am pretty sure they ride them in open fields, woods in more rural areas (20-40 minutes away).

You can ride them upstate on your own property...Not legal anywhere down here. Neither are snow mobiles...Or dirt bikes...
