anyone take a cruise stopping at key west?
DH and I are taking a cruise in March and one of the stops is key west. For those that have been there, is it necessary to book an excursion or can you pretty much walk around and do things on your own?

ive never cruised there but ive been going to KW for ages. its a relatively small town and there's cabs all around that area if you want to go to another part of the island. where the ship stops is really the heart of the island and you can do everything you want there.
what kind of excursions did you want to do?

i saw they offered history tours, trolley tours, etc. but they seemed kinda pricey so i wasn't sure if it was possible that we could just go off on our own... but since the cruise port is close to everything i think you answered my question.. thanks!!

and they have little stands at the end of duval street that offer excursions. there is a trolley tour that you could do. i think its called the old town trolley
btw if you like key lime pie, you HAVE to go to the Blonde Giraffe and have a chocolate dipped key lime pie on a stick. and have another for me!!

We just walked around there and enjoyed the shops and scenery. We got chocolate covered frozen key lime pie on a stick which was heavenly. I highly reconmend that!

I didn't take a cruise there, I went there with friends. But, the cruise docks at the end of the main road, so you can totally walk around the 'town'.
The day the cruise did dock, my friend and I did an excursion on jetskis, and a couple did it as well (off the cruise). We had SO MUCH FUN! The jet skis went around the island and we went into little inlets. The tour guide got off his jetski, and caught a sea anemone for us to hold in our hands.
We had a BLAST because we were out in the open ocean jumping waves etc. (And had never been on jetskis)

Ive cruised there 6 yrs ago and at that time, Dh & I just walked around the town... saw the lighthouse, hemingways house, and got some food and drinks at one of the many bars... no need to book an excursion really
