Ireland rec's? Please come in

Planning a last minute Ireland trip in April. Aerlingus has some fab deals but I'm just not sure what to do and where to go for the 6 nights we have. Should we do Ashford Castle or Adare castle? I'd like to do some B&B's too. Is the driving too much to do?

Thanks so much in advance for your help!

Ahh..Ireland.

We loved Aer Lingus. It's owned with Jet Blue, so we had TVs in our seats, too, which I always love.

I only did the Dublin Castle, as far as castles went.

We drove around the bottom part of country, from like Dublin to Killarney. It was a lot of driving, but I did all of it myself, and honestly, I had too. I said to myself, "how many times am I in Ireland? Might as well do this!" and it was so worth it.

Ring of Kerry is awesome to drive around, and breathtaking scenery..it really depends on the kind of experience you want.

We didn't stay at a B&B, but a chain.

It is such a magical country!

LChat Icon VE Ireland...

We did Dublin, Limerick, Galway, Wicklow, Tipperary and Liscannor. We flew into Dublin on Aer Lingus (which is a great airline!!!) and then rented a car.

Things we did/saw... St. Stephen's Green, Trinity College, saw Riverdance at the Gaiety Theatre, the Rock of Cashel, Kilkenny Castle, Canice's Cathedral, Dunguiare Castle, the Cliffs of Mohr (and O'brien's Tower) and of course the Guinness Factory. There were also other smaller churches, cathedrals and castles that we saw but couldn't identify. There is some great food in Ireland! We wouild just stop in random pubs or restaurants and everyone was so beyond friendly... I seriously love Ireland. A lot of people told me they didn't like Dublin but we loved walking around the streets. I thought it was a great city.

Wicklow was very hilly, by the way! and Dublin had a lot of cobbled-streets...so wear reasonable shoes!

i am looking into going in April - I've been on Aer Lingus' website and the prices aren't that great, about $750.00. what have you found?

Re: Ireland rec's? Please come in

We were over in Ireland this past Thanksgiving.....it was such a great trip!

The tour group we used was CIE. If you have never been to Ireland, HIGHLY recommend using a tour first. They have a ton of different tours to choose from.

We flew into Shannon and out of Dublin with Aer Lingus. Both were great flights. As mentioned before each seat has a TV.

We stayed at the Bunratty Castle Hotel. The location was great, but the hotel itself kinda stunk. Had a medieval Dinner which was really nice.

Killarney and Kilkenny are nice places for shopping. Just a bit of advice. When we were there all the stores closed by 6pm. Couldn't get much shopping in when you get back from the tour about 5:15ish.

We also stopped at the Woolen Mills by the Blarney Stone. I kissed the blarney stone.

Cliffs of Moher were awesome!

Japanese Gardens and Horse something or other, not that exciting.

Flying boat museum and Cobh center, and Skelig experiment (sp?) not that exciting either.

Dublin, there are TONS of this to do. We went to the jail which was fun. Guinness factory. Did a little bit of the bus tour. They call it the hop on hop off bus tour. We also took the dart (their train) which was kinda cool.

Waterford factory is now open....great tour if you can do that.

Ring of Kerry has nice views.

Also as part of the tour we had an Irish Dinner with irish dancing and music.

If you have any questions let me know! We only took about 417 pics...LOL Chat Icon

Not sure what the weather is there in APril, but bring warm clothes, and rain wear too.

If the choice is between Adare or Ashford, I would pick Ashford Castle. It is absolutely gorgeous. There is nothing quite like it Chat Icon Will you be flying into Shannon and out of Dublin? Adare village itself is really pretty, with lots of thatched cottages and isn't far from Shannon. If you have your choice of accomodation there I can highly recommend the Dunraven Arms.

My favorite spots throughout the country are Lahinch in Co. Clare, Westport in Co. Mayo, Kilkenny City and Kinsale or Blarney in Co. Cork.

Enjoy!

Re: Ireland rec's? Please come in

I loved it there! The whole country is about the same size as the state of Maine... so it's really not THAT big.. we were there for 5 full days and saw A LOT!!
Blarney Castle
Bunrattie Castle
Dublin-guiness factory
Shannon
Galway
Limerick
Cliffs of Moher-amazing!

The only thing we missed that I wish we did was the ring of Kerry.

Have fun!!!

I'm from there so have been back and forth a lot to visit family but since going with my DH I've done more sight-seeing and I def recommend the Ring of Kerry...it's fabulous. We did a tour that included a horse drawn carriage ride through the gap of Dunloe, lunch stop, and then a boat through the lakes. We also checked out Blarney Castle (nice but quick day trip) and the Cliffs of Moher, which were also fantastic! I didn't drive (my dad did) but I do remember some of the roads on the Cliffs of Moher trip to be a bit hairy...just had to take it easy, that was it. Chat Icon
