Mom's of kids with Asthma please come in!

I may be totally jumping to conclusions here...and am probably over analyzing EVERYTHING my DD's Dr. has ever said to me but....here it goes.

DD is 12 months old. She got at cold at 5-6 months and then got croup for the first time.

Then at 9-10 months or so...got another cold...and croup again. At this appointment the Dr. said that he was concerned that she got croup twice in less than a year and that if this keeps on happening she may be diagnosed with Asthma.

She is sick again (12.5 months) Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I took her in today and she has some kind of Bronchial thing going on (not Bronchitis). DD was wheezing and had to have a Nebulizer treatment. She has never had this done before and has never wheezed before this. The treatment was horrible...DD wanted NOTHING to do with it....not I have to treat her 3 times a day until monday. The Dr. said that this type of Bronchial infection causes wheezing but that if she continues to get colds with croup or pulmonary issues....they will prob diagnose her with Asthma!!!

I am obviously concerned now....its been three colds that have developed into something more.

Can you share with me your situation? How your child was diagnosed and at what age? How are they treated?

Thank you so much in advance!!!

Have you seen a pulmonologist? We just saw Dr Vaysman the other day and he was great!

The Dr. said if the next two times she gets sick...she continues to have these issues....we would take it to the next step. I guess I am just worrying and jumping to conclusions!

Re: Mom's of kids with Asthma please come in!

josh had NOTHING until 18 mos old.

He caught a cold from a friend...turned into a cough...woke up and his stomach was pumping hard to breathe. Bring him to ped, they call 911, ambulance arrives, instantly on oxygen and hospitalized.

that is how it started.

then I would be in the ER at night 4-5 times a month.

I took him off gluten and dairy, he went on 2-3 treatments a day of pulmicort and dubneb.
I bought a new house, tore up new carpets, threw out toys, new bedding...kept him away from all sick kids.
I lost my mind. I was in a ton of medical bill debt.

Now I am learning everyday how to control it. We have had an off week. Fevers at night. But no cough.

good luck! I have learned not to let the ped give meds, change meds or diagnose anything.
all through the pulm dr only. these meds are powerful with side effects...i only let a specialist tell me what to do.

DS hasn't been diagnosed as Asthmatic but because of his illness history(RSV, bronchiolitis) and his allergies our PED said he was prone to asthma. We also have a strong family history of Asthma.

Is it possible your PED is just letting you know that your DC may be prone to Asthma and if the situations continue to arise he will take the next step by recommending you see a pulmonologist?

Thanks Ladies...My PED is definitely just giving me the heads up....so I am aware that this may happen. I just want to inform myself as best as I can. Until I went to the PED today i had no idea she was even wheezing so now I am paranoid that I'm missing something! She's fine...as happy as can be. Aside from her runny nose she is acting normal....me on the other hand...I have a cold and I'm miserable! haha! I wish I had her attitude!

Thanks for the info!

It''l get better Chat Icon I did the same thing when DS had RSV, I didn't realize how poorly he was breathing and what to look for. THe PED stayed with us for a long time until we were comfortable with what to look for, when to call the emergency line and when to go to the ER. We don't know these things until we experience them Chat Icon

DS hated his nebulizer at first, but after the first few treatments he got used to ti. He has a bad cold right now that has moved into his chest and we are having to do the treatments again, the first one he fought me on but them settled back into it.

My ds has asthma. He was diagnosed at 3 years old. He was breathing so hard and wheezing, i knew something was wrong. We took him to the hospital. He ended up being admitted for two days. Everytime he gets a common cold now its turns into something bad. Coughing and wheezing. He takes singulair every nite. and hes on treatments for his flare ups and when he gets a cold.

Is Asthma something your child can eventually grow out of...or does it mean they will have Asthma as an adult as well?

Thank you...so true! Now I know what to look out for. I hope the next treatments go smoothly! She more she cries the more boogies she makes!! Its out of control! I am full of snot! Also the Ped told me to gently bang her back and chest before the treatments to loosen the mucus but when she tried it on me....it wasn't so gentle! Does everyone do this too?!?!?
