Seriously Considering Moving To North Carolina
My brother just moved down to Charlotte and loves it. I haven't visited yet. DH and I both work but we're still struggling. I'm also ready for nicer weather. I've finally convinced DH to atleast consider the move.
For those of you who live in NC or have family down there could you recommend a few cities that I can start to research and visit. Most important is school district, safe area and some nearby shopping would be great.

Charlotte is close to all you mentioned. We lived in Matthews. Mint hill is nice, south park is SUPER nice and expensive for nc. Ballentyne is great to. Try and stick with union school district. Fm janice and mrsrivera. They both live there. We moved to matthews in 2008, moved back to ny in 2009. Not for us. Nice to visit, but we are nyers. My brother and his family live in Matthews, they love living there. As far as nice weather, yes that was a huge plus. But currently according to my brother, its been in the teens in the morning this week. We had snow when we were there. They cznt function in the snow. EVERYTHING closes, dr offices, schools, stores, its nuts.

i have family that lives down there too! they all love it but the weather there is not too much different than it is here. yea, it may be a tad bit warmer but they still get snow and when they do it's worse than here (imo) bc everything shuts down...

Thanks for the input. The whole weather thing reminds me of a friend I went to college with, she was from North Dakota and could not believe schools were closed the first "snow storm" she experienced here. She laughed and said 6" was a good day over there. She was expecting atleast 4 feet of snow

We just about almost moved to Waxhaw NC ( Wesley Oaks was the development ) LOVED it there, but chickened out (after putting a deposit down on a gorgeous house  ) because we were afraid we weren't going to be able to sell our house etc...
Its just outside Charlotte, in Union County...In the peticular dev'p we were looking in there were tons of transplanters from LI, & NJ....Lots of nearby shopping ...Highly reccomend that area and often wonder what life would have been like there

We have been seriously considering moving to the Charlotte area as well, but due to personal reasons, we have decided to stay put here.
We have friends that live there and love it. They live in the area known as Ballantyne. We visited them in May and toured several communities, including Ballantyne (which is South Charlotte) and Union County in the areas of Marvin, Waxhaw, Weddington and Wesley Chapel.
Union County schools are very highly rated and the subdivisions all appeared nice with huge homes. We were completely sold on the area as far as the size and quality of the homes, the ammenties within the subdivisions, the schools, the shopping, and the weather.
I did a ton of research on City Data and I was able to view both Charlotte and Union County home values, appraisals, taxes, etc. through their respective County websites.
There's a ton of info out there. Good luck to you!

LOVE LOVE LOVE it there.
We rented for about 2 years there, then made the move to buy in
Waxhaw.
DH could die in Waxhaw. Has an extreme love for it. School is FANTASTIC. Super safe. 15 minutes south of Ballantyne.
I have been down here 4 years. Never once considered moving back. I have a very nice life.
Waxhaw=mini LI.
I can throw a stone without hitting a LI'er.
Transplant central. Not sure where all the natives went
My kid is having a party on saturday:
7 NY families(LI, Westchester)
3 CA families
1 Texas
just showing that I am not down here with rednecks.
Then, some people move down here and HATE it.
Depends on why you are moving. I moved to sah with kids.
Others to shorten commute.
If you are moving for sq footage, you will probably end up hating it. I have found you need more then that to justify it.
For us it works.
Concert tickets are almost 1/2 the price of MSG.
Tickets to sports events are super cheap.
I have found tons to do with my kids.
Beach is 3 hours away, mountains 2 hours away...swim and ski.
NY is a 1/2 day drive, so is FL.

Parks are super nice down here
We buy our season passes to Carowinds each year and love that
Since it is transplant central...if you want to make friends, you will.

If you buy in waxhaw, a lot of us get USDA loans on our homes.
no money down no pmi-it is a rural area that is sure to grow, so very little risk to the bank.

I moved to NY from Charlotte in 2008. I loved Charlotte and miss it a lot. As far as where to live, I lived in the First Ward (downtown is divided into four quadrants, or wards) and wouldn't say downtown is family friendly. However, the Dilworth area is very nice and very family friendly, and only a few minutes from downtown. The far suburbs you can get a lot more for your money and traffic in Charlotte on a bad day is nothing compared to LI traffic on a good day! Feel free to FM me if you have any questions.

I live in Apex-just outside of Raleigh. We also lived in Cary. LOTS of shopping, great schools(check out of they are year round or traditional although that is always changing) We like it here alot

Moved in 2007 for a better work/life balance.
We live in the Charlotte area(next county over) and like it a lot. We have a nice little life going on and we have family here a lot-my mom is moving down, my BF and her family bought a house around the block and my inlaws I'm pretty sure will move down eventually.

My sister lives in Indian Trail and ITA about the Union County schools. She used to work in a school outside of Union County and she said it wasn't good at all. We love NC and are planning to move as soon as we can. Everything is so much cleaner and everyone is so much nicer. The downside is that everything is at a much slower pace - but I actually don't consider that a "downside" at all!
I was just there this past weekend and it was COLD!

My Step Brother lives in Leland, NC. We love visiting him and they have really started to build up there. Lots of new stores. I hope to move there one day.

I have a lot of family that live in the Charlotte area and they all love it there. They are scattered throughout the area. My sister lives in Providence Plantation which is a beautiful development. I have a nephew in Mint Hill, and a niece that lives in Stallings, and a cousin in Waxhaw. As for the weather, it generally is a little warmer in the winter, but they have had a major cold front recently as others have said, and when they do have snow the whole area shuts down. My sisters family moved down when the kids were in HS and middle school. They went to Providence HS which they really liked. I also have a nephew who lives in the Chapel Hill area, and previously lived in Raleigh. He really likes it there. Good luck!

the quality of life seems to be sooooo much better.

we moved down in 2007 and LOVE IT. Infact we have only visited NY 1x since moving down.
We live in what's called the piedmont triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point) are the 3 major cities all within about 15 minutes of eachother.
Look into your area of work to determine what area of NC would work for you.
My DH is in medicine, so he does well and there are hospitals all around and he works so I don't have to....or rather it doesn't pay for me to work because my salary wouldn't be worth putting 2 kids in daycare for.
the ONLY thing I miss in my area is the fact that I have to drive about 4 hours to the beach. The mountains are 1 1/2 hours. But less taxes, 1/2 acre, a new home, great neighbors, lots of family stuff to do, parks, etc make it all worth it!

Wilmington beachy college town
