spinoff to tipping garbage/mail ppl - When?
Can someone help me out with when you leave the tip (or whatever) for them? we haven't even been here a month and are still clueless about owning a home!
Thanks!!!! 
edited to clarify - i meant should we leave it this week, or next week? DH was concerned that the "regular" ppl may have off next week (particularly mailman)

are you able to physically give it to them? If you leave it on the lid there is a good chance someone could steal it.
DH will run out to them, but you can also mail it to their "office"

we can probably do that, depending on the morning (DH leaves well before garbage p/u when he's working).
although our garbage doesn't go to the curb... they come around the back of the house to get it - do you think it's still a bad idea to leave it on the lid if it's not at the curb?

You can leave it this week or next. I can tell you that in DH's job no one takes off this time of year for someone (within his job) screwing them out of their tips

You can tape a note on the lid that says ring the bell. Do not mail it in.

can I ask you why? Our garbagemen left a card in our mailbox with the address (I know tacky of them, but I understand - I don't want it stolen either)

Since the town picks it from behind your house instead of the curb I would tape it to the lid. I would do it this week although it doesn't really matter. I would hope if you got a different one that they would give it to the regular garbage man.
As far as the mailman goes - do they leave a card for you? I know we frequently have a different carrier so that is an issue for us.

like a business card?? idk, haven't seen a card of any type. we did meet him on the day we closed though, he introduced himself.

Depending on what county/town/city they work for, they are not supposed to be tipped. If people are caught taking tips (rarely happens) they can get fired.
Same thing with postal employees.

I plan on doing it tomorrow for the garbage men - we have Tues/Fri pick up and I work from home tomorrow so I should be able to catch them.
I will probably leave the tip for the mailman tomorrow as well.
