Resigning after coming off of maternity leave? WWYD?

While on maternity leave, I interviewed with another company. I am pretty sure I am going to be offered the position.

The new job would allow me to work PT 20-24 hours per week and is significantly closer to my home (15 min commute vs. 45 mins to an hour).

One of my DC has also developed a medical issue which is going to require daily medication for over a year and some "experimenting" with dosages to get them right. We don't want to put DC in daycare due to this issue. If I took this position, DC would always be with a parent or grandparent.

However, I have been at my current job for almost 5 years. They have been very good to me and paid me in full for my 4 month maternity leave (full pay for 8 weeks is policy, 4 weeks was my vacation time, and 4 weeks was "gift").

How bad am I going to look if I resign when I am due to go back to work? Would you do it? I was also thinking of using the current offer as a bartering tool to get PT where I work now. I brought it up once and they weren't too receptive, so I was going to say that I had an offer from somewhere else for PT status, could you match it. The commuting time is still significantly longer though... WWYD?????

Take the position that works best for you and your family. It's business. Try not to stress it.

At the end of the day you need to worry about you and your family - do what best for them...

Ultimately, you need to do what's right for your family. But I would definitely speak to your current job about the possibility of going part-time. It's sounds like they've been very good to you during maternity leave and I would at least try and work it out with them instead of just resigning. If they can't let you do PT with them, well, then you have to leave, but at least you tried to work it with them. That's what I would do...

I agree. And some companies have a contract where if you do not return, you have to pay back the "gift" maternity leave payment. You'd probably know if that's the case, but it may be worth checking.

ITA. Hopefully they will shoot you down, and you can leave w/ a clear head. KWIM? At the end of the day you have to do what is right for you, and your family. Could you also just tell them your resigning to stay home w/ you dc who needs the extra attention? Would they know you were working at the new place? Same industry? Also that gift of 4 weeks paid, will you have to pay back if you leave.

It depends on what you do for a living and job stability. It sounds like your last place invested in you. If you have a unique skill... Go for the new position. If not... Weigh your options carefully.

Ok, I have a totally different perspective so please, no haters Chat Icon Chat Icon

I work for a company where a similar situation took place. A woman left for medical reasons and she used her vacation/sick/personal time as well as being "gifted" extra paid leave because she worked for the company for 5 + years.

The managers at our job sent her flowers, visited her in the hospital and called her periodically to wish her a speedy recovery. She was never once asked to return to work early ( I know this for a fact.)

She quit as soon as her paid leave was up saying that she had accepted a new job out of state.

The managers were very disappointed both personally and professionally with her behavior. She was asked why she accepted the "gift" paid leave when she already knew she was leaving. She never answered them.

I think a better compromise would have been to give them appropriate notice for your industry (be that 2 weeks or 2 months, depending how skilled you are and how difficult it would be to replace you). Leaving without any notice, especially if they were good employers to you, seems like "burning a bridge."

I would take your actual time (leave plus vacation) and then tell them ofyour plans. I would offer to return the "gifted" time. That was given as a perk not necessarily earned.

That said, I would got for the new position. The commute alone is reason enough, add to that everything you are dealing with as far as daycare, the medical issue etc. It just seems meant to be.

I just wouldn't want to burn a bride or be unprofessional is your departure so I don't think you can keep the extra 4 weeks in good conscience.

I think that if your job needed to save $ they would cut you and not think twice that you just had a baby etc. so when the tables are turned you have to think like them and do what's best for you and your family because they would do the same

I agree with this.

You always want to act like a professional so nothing bites you in the *** down the road.

I would give notice.
But I did leave my job while I was 7 months pregnant to come to a new one.
Although everyone was dissapointed I was leaving, I had to do what was best for me and my future baby.
I did give them more than 2 weeks notice.
