I guess. My mother doesn't want to fly because she doesn't want to get an xray because she is getting 2 more soon.

Re: Flying and Xrays

not mandatory.. i requested a private pat down this past weekend.. it wasn't bad.. they can pat you down right there in front of everyone, or take you to a room and there will be two TSA officers.. it was ok, the ladies were pleasant and i was out of there in 5 mins or less..

eta: when i flew out of JFK, it was the regular metal detector Chat Icon thing, but flying back into JFK, they had the scanners..

If she is selected to go through the new body scanner she can opt out of that but then she will have to be patted down. The only other option is to go home. But she may not be selected for this and will only be required to go through the regular metal detector. The problem of course is that she won't know until she gets to the front of the line.

She can also request the pat down in private. She should be warned that if she's selected, the pat down is very thorough - they feel just about every inch of your body.

Yep...that's what my mom said. She got selected for the scanner at LGA and b/c of her fake hip she had to have a pat down too. She asked for a private pat down and they made her walk barefoot to the room and she said she felt violated afterwards. Chat Icon

Re: Flying and Xrays

Uggghh..she is never going to go for the pat down-lol!!

Maybe I can convince her with the xrays.

Is it THAT bad to get 3 xrays in a little amount of time?

Re: Flying and Xrays

there is very little radiation emanated from it.. and its also a matter of comfort. Honestly, the pat downs are not bad.. I travel a lot and the one I got here was nothing compared to what I (and everyone else) got in the Middle East.. Chat Icon

She will probably receive more radiation from the actual flight then from the scanner at the airport.

That's true actually. Just being at a very high elevation exposes you to radiation. Tell her to relaxChat Icon Chat Icon

It's true, during air flight you are exposed to cosmic radiation.
