Question for the Jewish ladies

We were at Pier 1 earlier and bought some Christmas presents for Dh's staff.

Would it be appropriate to buy a snowman decoration for a Jewish coworker?

I hope this isn't a silly question. For me - the only reason I put snowmen decor out is because that is all part of Christmas decor for me.

Re: Question for the Jewish ladies

Are they orthodox? That will pretty much give you the answer; if so, they probably would accept it politely but maybe not use it kwim?

But for someone like me, totally not religious at all, I have snowmen in the house.

Hmmm. I asked DH , he wasn't sure if they are orthodox. But he does know that they go to temple.

Re: Question for the Jewish ladies

I like snowmen so long as they don't have holly or anything Christmas-y on them.

Re: Question for the Jewish ladies

I am pretty much a secular Jew and only follow very basic traditions, but if someone gave me a snowman as a gift I would thanks them politely and then re-gift or donate the thing immediately. To me, snowman is a part of Christmas.

I would imagine that if that person goes to temple he/she would feel the same way.

Re: Question for the Jewish ladies

we actually just had this discussion at work. I am not Jewish but we have an orthodox jewish person in our dept. One of the other dept members was saying that a parent at their kids school was offend because there was a snowman in the classroom and the snowman was a religious symbol and the whole religion in schools thing. The orthodox jewish person said that he wouldn't be offended by a snowman and he didnt consider it religious at all. He considered it a winter thing not a holiday thing.

Re: Question for the Jewish ladies

I don't think someone would be offended, but I don't think a Jewish person would use or put out a snowman decoration. That's JMO though.

Re: Question for the Jewish ladies

I am not Orthodox by any means but I wouldn't display a snow man. It doesn't necessarily represent Christmas to me but more the "winter holiday" that Christmas has become (if that makes any sense...). I would probably accept it graciously and pass it along to another friend who would appreciate it more Chat Icon

Re: Question for the Jewish ladies

to clarify, Im not opposed to having a snowman in a classroom or at work or anything and I dont think its a religious symbol but it is a decoration that is associated with christmas in my opinion so as a moderately religous jewish person, I wouldnt put it up in my own home (and my orthodox family members def would not.)

Re: Question for the Jewish ladies

If it looks like an ornament or something to be hung from a tree, I would not use it. I would donate it or pass it along to someone who would appreciate it. If it had holly or anything like that I would not display it either. HTH

I wouldn't be offended by a snowman, but I'd never buy and display one myself. Even though a snowman is not a religious symbol it does have an association with Christmas as far as I am concerned. I don't know any Jewish people who decorate their homes with snowmen. But that's just me.

I am not very religious at all, but I don't see a snowman as a religious symbol. I'm actually surprised how many people do.

ditto. I dont see the religious connection. Holiday 'theme' yes.

TY to the OP for reminding me to put out my 2 snowmen and 1 snowwoman!
If I was the coworker i'd love it and think it was perfect.

I don't think that non christian people see a snowman as a religious symbol at all.. just that it is another symbol associated with the christmas season, so therefore not something that a jewish person would necessarily display. Like Santa or reindeer or wreaths. None of these things are religious, however they're associated with a particular religious holiday.

I wouldn't be offended by it, but I also probably wouldn't display it. I think snowmen are used as part of a Christmasy/wintery display, and I just don't decorate my house like that.

Re: Question for the Jewish ladies

I was just thinking about this yesterday. We went to visit FMIL and I was looking in all the windows at decorations, menorahs and then others had snowflakes, and I was thinking how the meorah is so specific to a religious purpose and snowflakes are so non-specific, but you really don't see Jewish people putting up snowflakes, it's a Christmas thing,

Pier one has some really nice in expensive candle gifts, I would do that. Jewish people don't tend to really decorate like that for the winter holiday. We put out a window menorah and blue and white lights outside, but we're also interfaith, so that's there to have a presence alongside the christmas tree and colored lights. If not for me, I don't think FH would go beyond the menorah.

Re: Question for the Jewish ladies

To me, snowmen aren't a religious symbol exactly but more of a wintery symbol. However, since Christmas has taken over the entire month of December they are definitely associated with Christmas decorations.

DH & I are interfaith and I only started putting out snowmen type decorations after we moved in together.

To me the only Chanukah decorations are dreidel or menorah themed items.

I'm not Jewish but, my old roommate was. She loved decorating for the holiday season - with snowmen.

Re: Question for the Jewish ladies

I would not be offended but it would never be a part of my holiday decor.

Point is, I think it's a waste of your money.

I would accept it graciously and think it was generous of you to think of me, but I would feel badly that you spent your money on something I could not use.

That could be said for a lot of gifts we all get.

I agree- I have nothing to be offended by a business or school displaying a snowman, but I'd never display one in my home beacuse it does have an association with Christmas as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Question for the Jewish ladies

I think the answers on here are interesting. I am not Jewish but I know a few Jewish Families that do decorate with Snowmen, Snowflakes, etc. Along with their Menorah.

In my house the snowmen and "wintery decorations" stay up long after the Christmas decorations are put away.
