Going to LA/Hollywood, CA in early January

I'm planning a trip with my mom for about 3-4 days days in early January to see Universal Studios, Hollywood, Bev Hills, CA. We've never been there before so would like to know whether

1- early January would be good weather over there,

2- is it better to book flights/tours with a Travel Agent or just find cheaper deals through Expedia/Orbits/Hotwire/Hotels.com??

3- what are "must see" touristy places to see around that area of CA?

4- do we really need to rent a car?

Thanks for all suggestions/tips!

I've been to that area several times in January and sometimes it's in the 80s, sometimes 70s and sometimes the high has been 60s.

I would book everything on your own. JetBlue flies to the airports in that area - LA, Burbank and Long Beach. I would rent a car if you plan on going to places like Laguna Beach.

We were there last January. The weather is mild there, I wore a tank top jeans and a light jacket. A car is a must. It's the easiest way to get around.

1 weather - I lived in San Diego - which is "similar" and January is rainy season - which isn't like rain in NY, so even if you do get some rain - it's not that bad.

it can get very cool at night - even into the 30s

2 flights - I usually look for flights using expedia, etc, but then go directly to the airline to book that flight - it's usually a few dollars cheaper in fees.

3 Bev Hills/Rodeo Dr, Hollywood sign, Hollywood Blvd/Sunset, La Brea, Santa Monica, amusement parks, Getty Center, catch a show at the Hollywood Bowl. If you want to venture out of LA - you can find some great outdoor activities.

4 you need a car in LA

1 - weather is nice that time of year but can get cold at night - 40's or 50's. Bring a warm jacket.

2 - I would book yourself. There are so many flights and hotels in and to LA.

3- must see? What do you like to do? Museums? Getty Museum? Griffith Observatory. La Brea Tar Pits. Driving the Hollywood Hills to the Hollywood sign. Walking along Melrose Ave and looking in the shops. Santa Monica - Third Street Promenade, the pier.
Venice Beach, Long Beach, Malibu. Sunset Boulevard, Rodeo Drive, LA Zoo.

4 - 10000000% you need to rent a car- LA is NOT a public transportation city.

Have fun - I'm there a few times a year so feel free to ask any questions.
