car spinoff - if you leased and then purchased
did you regret it?
i have leased my last two cars and now we are thinking about buying my next car.
i LOVE having a new car every three years, zero worry about maintenance etc but it might be more practical for us to just purchase the car outright.
if you leased in the past and then purchased, did you regret it?

Re: car spinoff - if you leased and then purchased
Not me...but this happened to my friend. Her mom leased her a car when she graduated but my friend made the payments. When the lease was up, her mother "negotiated" with the company and my friend then continued making payments, assuming she'd bought the car and would be done paying it off shortly. 8 years later, she is STILL making a $300+ car payment because her mother negotiated a horrific deal. They definitely regret it.
So, I have no experience with this but I always heard that unless the buy-out is tremendous, to never buy-out a lease because financially it isn't worth it, from what I have heard.

We always bought cars. Just leased 2011 Honda cr-v, never will buy again. We got such an amazing deal, I just can't see buying again.

Re: car spinoff - if you leased and then purchased
I think it is better to buy less expensive cars and lease expensive cars - so it matters what i am buying
based on the residual value of high end cars - they are usually pretty good lease deals
but if the lease price is close to the buy price - i buy which usually happens with lower end cars - under $40,000

Re: car spinoff - if you leased and then purchased
I like leasing however sometimes you can buy your car off a lease and get a good deal.
It will cost you more in the long run but circumstances change.
My dad has a 2002 Camry he leased for 36 months. It had 30K on it at the end of the lease.
He bought it out and paid a lower payment for the next 2.5 years.
It's in great shape, has 60K on it and he will drive it until it dies.
He can probably get another 3-4 years out of it without too much expense.
In that case, it served him well..the original lease deal was very good so he ended up paying more in the back end.

Re: car spinoff - if you leased and then purchased
I had always bought. Then my car before this one I leased. I was PG and did not know how the baby and stroller convenience would work out to be, and how the car would meet our criteria with a child. I did return the car and bought another car at the end of the lease.
I don't regret the lease. It was a great opportunity to "test" a car after our family expended without being committed for more than 3 years.
I bought my current car this year.
The price I am paying for my car now is about the same as I leased my other car. So it was making sense to buy.
I would not be opposed to leasing again in the future.

Re: car spinoff - if you leased and then purchased
im torn.
i leased a 2009 acura tsx and LOVE it. we are thinking about selling DH's 2001 Jeep Liberty and either leasing or buying a 7 passenger SUV (probably the volvo XC90).
we just had a baby this past spring and we would love more room - especially since we will probably think about a second child in the next 2 years.
i LOVE leasing but mileage is always a concern of mine. so torn.

I have never leased, only bought. I can tell you that I enjoy not having to make any payments because my car is paid off.

Re: car spinoff - if you leased and then purchased
No regrets. My lease was up in December 2008 - smack in the middle of the financial crisis, so good new lease deals were non-existant.
I love my car. It is in great shape, has low milage, and I take care of it. I don't need a new car every three years, but honestly I am lusting over the new CTS Coupe. I have a CTS sedan.
Only downside is that I will have paid more for this car than if I would have purchased it from the beginning.

Honestly, if you are not sure how you will like the car or if your needs will change, then I would lease, depending on the lease deals you could get vs. buying.

Re: car spinoff - if you leased and then purchased
I always leased my cars, I am the type that likes change. So I loved getting a new car every 3 years. In early 2009, I got my current car as a gift, so we own it now. I absolutely love the car, so I have no issues at this point that I won't be getting a new car in another year or so. But ask me then

Re: car spinoff - if you leased and then purchased
I have always leased and my DH always buys and drives the car for 5-6 years.
My lease is up and we were in the market for an SUV. We did the math and the payment for the vehicle we were considering was about 1k/month. Considering that # over the course of 3 years it made no sense to lease. So we are buying, cash at inception so no financing cost, with the intention to drive the car for 6-7 years. I am also very light on cars about 5k miles/year so another reason it doesn't pay to lease for us.

Re: car spinoff - if you leased and then purchased
leasing wouldn't work for my family... my husband likes to make alot of adjustments to a car after we get it so it would be a waste to lease

Re: car spinoff - if you leased and then purchased
I think it depends on your situation. We have done both... It was nice to drive a nicer car with a lease, but right now a lease doesn't work for us. We put too many miles on the car. I also hate dealing with negotiating car deals, so I'm happy we don't have to do it in 3 years... I also like the idea, that one day, we could have a paid off car.
