Auto Insurance cards
When you get your new insurance card do you throw away the old one??
I just went through DH's glove box looking for the ins card - making an appointment to have the windshield replaced - and I swear the pile goes all the way back to when w bought the car in 2003!!!!! Why on earth is he saving all of them!

Re: Auto Insurance cards
I don't have any insurance cards in the car.
If a cop runs your plate they can usually see the insurance in the computer.
I've never had a problem.

Re: Auto Insurance cards
I keep the current card in my wallet and destroy old ones. There's no reason for having them and it just gets confusing after a while.

Re: Auto Insurance cards
i dont do it right away... every couple of months i will go through the glove box or middle console and throw stuff out... thats when i usually throw out the old insurance cards...
i keep all my mail from my insurance company which usually has 2 copies of the card... so i have a copy of it if i need it for something.

not the best idea - there are DMV lags and computer glitches all the time. they will ticket you for not carrying proof of insurance!

Re: Auto Insurance cards
You should always carry the card. By law you are required to show proof of insurance (NYS VTL 319/3)...it just makes it easier for the cop to have all the info sitting right there when verifying.
I try to throw out the old ones when i put the new ones in. (i used to be a card hoarder though..haha)

Re: Auto Insurance cards
I have a bunch of them. When I need something in my glove box I will probably start tossing old ones.

Re: Auto Insurance cards
I always throw mine out as soon as the new card arrives in the mail. With my luck, if I have to pull it out - I'd probably pull out the old one and have the other person (or a cop) look at it and go "so now you're not even insured huh?! here's a ticket for driving around un-insured or with an expired insurance ID card!!
So to avoid that potential headache, I just keep my current card on me and also in my glove compartment.

I actually got a ticket on 135 in 2007 for not having my insurance card in the car.

you also need it for accident purposes. you may need to exchange info if anything happens (knock wood that it doesn't)

Re: Auto Insurance cards
Since we usually get two when we get them from our insurance company DH hides one in the car and one in his wallet.
We usually shred and throw out the old one once we get the new ones.

been there..they have my plate, my registration and my name and insurance carrier.
that's all they need.
and to boot they are not insurance cards anymore..just a piece of paper.
I also don't have that in the car in case it gets stolen..then they know where I live.
