They did a "Fox Investigates" story on the Town of Brookhaven's animal shelter and the salary that the supervisor made in overtime and how the local government's are struggling in this economy.
How about the salaries of all the senior execs and newscasters at Fox? How dare they especially when the pulled the plug for over a week and LI customers could not watch programs because of their shenanigans with Cablevision.

I thought it was a ridiculous story. So the guy gets overtime and is legally able to do so? So he is taking is EARNED sick time before retiring? They were following him like a criminal. I understood their reasoning that the pension and laws need to change, but the entire story was done wrong.
And you can't compare government workers to television people. TV companies have their own money. They aren't in debt and looking to cut spending to different areas. Although, execs sure get a lot and reporters can barely keep food on the table. But that is the stupidity of those of us that got into the field.

I'm not really sure that's a valid comparison.. aren't the animal shelter supervisor's paid from the local government funds? That's tax payer money. I'm NOT saying it isn't money well spent .. I didn't catch the newscast. But Fox - I believe - is privately owned and therefore can pay there execs anything they want with little impact on our taxes. Maybe I'm missing something..

Re: Did anyone watch Fox News last night at 10pm?
I was in bed and got up because it was a vicious attack yet again on unions and public employees. Yes I agree the OT/Sick/Vaca needs to be overhauled and will be during next contract negotiations (depending on your union/contract some are up now and some will be up next year) but this is a legal and normal practice that has been going on for MANY years. Typically by MANAGEMENT. Yes we are on hard economic times that is why we have contracts so when they are up things can be changed to reflect the time we live in.
I get annoyed that people attack every civil servants job by stating we should be all fired - um don't you get that most likely at least one person on your block (if you live in a middle class and working class community) is a civil servant? Don't you think that will have some affect on your community? Don't you understand that the majority of us making 40-60K a year and not 125K like the news likes to take and blow up in your face?
But this man was asked to do a job (most civil servants are currently covering more then their appointed positions) and most of us don't get extra pay to do it. This man was fortunate to have that happen and yes when your not hiring anyone people need to cover shifts and that equals OT. You want to reduce OT costs then either have public buildings/services close down when they can't have coverage or hire more people. Everyone wants it all - building and services with no disruption but a reduction in costs - how does that work?
Lastly, stop blaming unionized positions. If we had no unions most likely you will see practices such as no OT pay at all, no sick/paid leave, no medical benefits at all or barely any (especially now that the TEA party wants to repeal everything), no equal pay for equal work, etc. Yes somethings are very illegal (such as OT not being paid) but many companies without unions that are lower paid positions don't get fair benefits/pay. My husband has been making the same for 10 YEARS with triple the amount of work. They wanted to bring in a union and guess what PEOPLE WERE FIRED. You keep you damn mouth shut, work weekends and be glad you have a job. If you take away all unions this will be happening all over and you will see people being victimized by companies. Should there be union reform - absolutely! But to say to wipe out unions is like saying let's welcome slave labor all over again.
Sorry i get very touchy on this subject.
