McDonalds doesnt or shouldnt have to serve rice and veggies....THEY ARE A BURGER JOINT! Thats their niche.....burgers and fries, its what they do. A company shouldnt have to rework its menu bc of the lack of responsibility people take for themselves.

People need to take responsibility for what they put in their mouths and stop putting it all on the FF chains to do it for them.

Open a healthy fare fast food joint if thats what people want. However, it doesnt seem the demand is there, since there arent any.

I agree, I take my kids there 1x a month so they can eat french fries, not apples, which are what they are eating all the other days of the week!

Although I also agree that there is "corporate responsibility" and where our government can get involved to protect the public's health it should be done because not every parent is feeding their children properly at home.

While I see your concern for the kids whose parents are doing them a disservice, I DO NOT want the government stepping in a regulating what I can and cannot eat, KWIM? Unless we are just talking banning corn syrup or the trans fat ban. Im FOR banning unnecessary additives but not what I can and cannot put in my mouth.

Ridiculous, but I do understand their motivation.....but toys have been staple of happy meals forever and the obesity rates were not as high as they are now.

Its not the toys in the Happy Meals, its the lack of exercise, the fact that kids dont play outside anymore. Its the "always on the go" culture that doesnt lend itself easily to healthy home cooked family dinners. Its also a complacent and lazy generation of parents or just overscheduled, or a combo of all 3, who were raised during the emergence of instant meals, frozen dinners, fast food, minute this, minute that, expensive raw foods, etc. We are really the first generation to have ALWAYS had these options available to us as adults, and the children pay the price, but its what we know.

Its not the toy thats the problem, in fact, its probably the least of the problems.

ITA!!!

I couldnt agree more!!! Taking a toy out of the happy meal isnt going to stop the obesity rate of children.

i kinda giggled a bit about healthy fast food. there is a chinese food place by us who had strictly fresh/no cornstart, msg healthy food. Steam fresh items, limited "healthy" sauces, etc. Went out of business in three months. I was going there and the woman said all they want is fried junk.

Wow, that is so telling !

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal

I think removing the toy isn't going to help. As previous posters said kids need to get out more and exercise. Plus parents need to be educated on how to feed their children properly. Everything is ok in MODERATION. moderation is not 4x a week.

As a kid I remember eating McDonald's honestly once a year if even that. My younger sister was constantly treated to it. Once I became a teenager and older with my own money I would gorge on Mickey D's whenever I could. Between 18-21 I can honestly say I ate it 3-5x a week. I gained a lot of weight, but I chose to eat it. I STOPPED eating Mickey D's 2 years ago I find it gross. I'd rather eat at Wendy's or 5 guys (in moderation once every 2 months or so)

On the other side of things my cousin was fed Mcdonald's EVERYDAY (I wish I was kidding) from ages 3-8. He was insanely overweight. He had multiples of every happy meal toy given. As a teenager he started to thin out. Now as a young man he won't touch it. He's a personal trainer going to school for fitness and nutrition to be a gym teacher.

It's funny how things turn out sometimes. I had a healthy upbringing with limited happy meals. Now I sit here overweight. While my cousin was the opposite and he's a fit man. Just wanted to give a different perspective.Chat Icon

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal

This is just ridiculous!

Why attacking McDonald's? Because they have $$$

Plenty of mom and pop local businesses do no have to advertize their fat or calorie nutrition on their food. There is no telling how much fat and calories are in a local gyros here on LI.

Who said kids had to eat at fast food everyday? So the family who wanted to treat their kid to a happy meal while on vacation or a special day is now not allowed to do so.

But I guess it's OK to allow parents to feed their kids 1/2 gallon of ice cream, hotdogs and fries everyday at home if they want to.

This is so hypocritical!!!!!!

Not allowing me or my kid to eat a happy meal is NOT stopping obesity. I can do whatever I want at home without someone to tell me what I want. But now, we can't even treat our kid to McDonald EVEN if your kid does not have a weight problem.

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal

This is why I have zero faith in government. I wondered how they decided to do this. Let's hypothesize about the meeting these lovely politicians had...

"OK, everyone come to order. Hmm...let's see...what to do during the 4 days per month we work, what to do...let's tackle an issue. Bullying? Nah, not a big enough problem. Smoking? Nah, not a big enough problem, besides then we'd lose cigarette taxes. Drugs? Nah, not a big enough problem. Unprotected sex and teen pregnancy? Nah, not a big enough problem, besides, then we wouldn't have 16 and Pregnant. Hmm....HEY GUYS, I KNOW - LET'S BAN HAPPY MEALS AND FAST FOOD TOYS! Everyone will then be super skinny and not at all unhealthy and then parents won't have to actually teach their kids about nutrition! Yeah, great idea, LET'S VOTE! YAY ITS UNANIMOUS! Now we can go to lunch at the strip club and call it a day."

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal

Can someone please explain how people living at a poverty level are more likely to buy fast food? (Not being snarky, being serious)

I always thought it was cheaper to buy food at the supermarket and cook it rather than eat out.

Oh, and I think it's a great idea to ban the toys. No need to market unhealthy food to children. They will discover it eventually anyway.

It's WAY cheaper for a family to go order a bunch of items from the dollar menu. A proper, nutritious menu will easily run the average American family not at the poverty level around $150 per week; that includes lean proteins, the recommended servings of fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains and milk. And that is JUST food, no other household items. If you live on $22k per year, there is no way you are going to be able to afford that kind of money in groceries.

The dollar menu can stretch a long way. A double cheeseburger, drink and fries $3. Try to make that at home it'll cost you more than that because you have to buy ingredients on a larger scale. Not to mention fast food is convienent and mostly fresh. To a person with not alot of money McDonalds is the easy, complete, filling, cheaper and tastier option if I only had $3 for a meal.

There are a lot of reasons. These are just a few:

Someone may be a single mom working long hours a low wages and does not have time to cook.

A family may live somewhere where they don't have a stove, refrigarator or oven to cook.

Certain neighborhoods have a lot more bodegas and fast food places than farmers markets or access to fresh/health foods.

Adverstising is enticing. It brings people in and some people may not be educated about how unhealthy McDonalds REALLY is.

The best happy meal toy was the beanie babies back when I was in high school.Chat Icon That was quality!

I actually would go to McDonald's everyday afterschool and asked about their stock to collect them all.Chat Icon

But now thinking about it I didn't buy the happy meal but just the toy. So if the kids really want the toy they do sell it separately. So not offering the toy with a happy meal isn't going to cause much havoc because if the kids want the toy u can still buy it.

I know, thats what I was saying????? I said Im all for the govt banning unnecessary additives (which they have)? If they want to ban the trans fats, go ahead, but try to tell me I cant give my kid a happy meal altogether if I choose to, and thats a problem. Im well aware that is in McDonalds food. Im not sure I understand what you are asking?

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal

I think it should become the job of the pediatricians to give lists of food that have transfats in them.
explain to the parent what transfats do to the body.

Explain HFCS.

This should be the job of the child's dr.
A list should be handed out at the start of tablefoods with specific names of restaurants and food items.

I have to believe that parents just don't realize what transfats do.

It is so easy to look at a boney kid and justify fast food. The whole system needs an overhaul, but I don't believe it is at the fault of 1.00 toys.
If anything, the 1.00 toy cuts down their portion size from ordering a value meal

Going on a tangent here...

Has anyone seen the documentary Food Inc? It's disgusting what they put in food today. Even if you do go to McDonalds and order a grilled chicken breast sandwich - a chicken breast should not be that big. They pump the chickens with antibiotics to make them grow, and some of them are so big they can't even walk. Lot's of stuff has corn in it too. I forget why that was bad but I think they use corn to make a lot of processed food. And you can get addicted to it. And it's so expensive to grow organic. I remember the one farmer they wanted to shut him down because he was an organic farmer and they said he was unsanitary because he was cutting the chickens up out in the open air outside. Totally ridiculous.

I guess my point is - banning a happy meal is not going to do anything in the grand scheme of things...

ETA: I think I remember something in the documentary about them using a chemical that had BLEACH in it to CLEAN the burgers so they were free of bacteria before they went to the fast food joints and supermarkets...

Once again, I agree with Melissa. As per my previous post, some people are forced to eat FF, or other unhealthy processed foods, due to economic restraints. Fast food companies shouldn't have to shoulder to fact that you (speaking generally) are feeding your child fast food out of laziness or convenience. They should not have to change their menu to suit your needs.

If you want something healthy on the go, pack it yourself. Bottom line. Pack a little insulated lunch cooler w/an icepack and bring your own healthy food with you. But that's too hard for most Americans. It's a real wonder we have this epidemic when people don't want to do things for themselves and expect everyone around them to change to suit their needs.

I agree with everything you say except that its more expensive to eat healthy. Making your own meals and using non processed foods is WAY cheaper in my opinion than eating take out or fried crap. Naturally all organic is more expensive but to eat fruit and veggies, rather than cheetos, I don't see how.Chat Icon

I posted this in regards to cost:

Absolutely. This completely ties into the research I do for nutrition. Eating better and having the availibilty of healthy options at fast food places equals a price increase. As it is right now, there is such a high level of obesity and juvenile diabetes, among a whole host of other illnesses within children under the age of 12, even more so at the poverty level.

It costs MONEY to eat healthy, and the bottom line is that the families that rely on fast food meals as their main source of food do so because they cannot afford fresh produce, proteins and grains. The high cost of agriculture, import and export of goods, and lack of some of our own resources is what has led to this epidemic, for lack of a better word. A family of 4 is operating on a poverty level yearly income of $22,050...a monthly income of $1,838. Once rent and bills have been paid, how much do you think is left over to go Stop and Shop or Whole Foods? It is really isn't hard to see how people have come to rely on cheap, fast food as opposed to healthy options. A family of 4 not operating on the poverty level usually chooses fast food for the convenience factor as opposed to the price factor.

It really boils down to priorities. If people were better educated on the benefits of healthy eating, and the federal government helped mandate legislation to provide more funds for wellness programs and put a stop to the use of high fructose corn syrup and imported goods with little to no nutritional benefit, then younger generations might have a fighting chance to reverese some of the damage has been done.

I also posted this:

It's WAY cheaper for a family to go order a bunch of items from the dollar menu. A proper, nutritious menu will easily run the average American family not at the poverty level around $150 per week; that includes lean proteins, the recommended servings of fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains and milk. Totally true - this was also in the documentary. They actually filmed them going to the grocery store to buy food, they didn't have enough money to buy enough produce and meat to feed a family of 4, but they went to mcdonalds and they had enough $$ for all of them to eatChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal

I'm sorry but this is total b.s. McDonalds is not responsible for the obesity rate of children in the country. Parents who do not supervise their children's food intake are the responsible ones. My kids get fast food about 3 times a month. When we go they get chicken nuggets, milk and usually a healthy side like apples or oranges (depending on where we go). Occasionally I will get one of them fries with the meal and they'll split that along with the fruit. I make these choices as a parent. My kids eat very healthy on most days. If I want to allow them to eat unhealthy a handful of times a month then that is my choice as a parent.

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal

I truly think the title of this post is misleading. San Francisco did not ban the Happy Meal. They banned giving away a TOY unless the meal that goes with the free toy meets certain calorie and fat requirements.

McDonalds is free to continue to sell the Happy Meal as is food wise - they just can't include the toy.

So, any parent who wants to continue to feed their child a McDonalds hamburger (250 calories, 8g fat [3g saturated fat], 510mg sodium), small french fries (220 calories, 11g fat [1.5g saturated fat], 170mg sodium) and a 1% partly skimmed chocolate milk (140 calories, 2 g fat [1g saturated fat], 160mg sodium) is able to do so. Of course, a parent can always opt for the chicken nuggets (210 calories, 14g fat [2g saturated fat], 450mg sodium) instead of the hamburger.
