low milk supply? How do you know?

I was talking to my SIL who EBF her 4 month old. She was never able to pump more than 2-3 ounces but thought maybe her supply was decreasing b/c her recent pumping sessions produced only an ounce total! She doesnt pump on a daily basis. I told her I would ask on here. How would she know if her supply was low?

Does she only pump or does she also BF? At one point my pumping sessions went from 4oz to 1oz and it was because DD was finally able to latch on correctly and not because my supply had dropped. If she's BF the best way to judge is based on if the baby is happy after each feeding.

I stopped BFing at one month because of a low supply. DS was not gaining weight and would scream 10 minutes after nursing.

She BF's exclusively but will pump at times if she has to go out.

Re: low milk supply? How do you know?

It just recently dipped? Has AF returned for her yet? A dramatic dip in supply usually happened for me a few days before AF, or when my sons started solids.
She should keep up oatmeal, water, try fenugreek, and keep putting baby to breast to maintain and if it's AF, it should go back to normal within the week.

Is she pumping instead of a feeding or in addition to a feeding? If she's not pumping on a regular basis, she could be pumping only 1 oz b/c her supply has regulated and she's only producing what she normally needs. If she wants to increase her supply, she needs to pump every day.

If she's taking fenugreek she needs to smell like maple syrup for it to be working Chat Icon I'm taking 3 pills 4x a day, I wasn't smelling like maple syrup at the recommended dose.
