San Francisco bans the Happy Meal
Do we like?
The city's board of supervisors votes to forbid restaurants from giving away toys with meals that have high levels of calories, sugar and fat.

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal
Ridiculous, but I do understand their motivation.....but toys have been staple of happy meals forever and the obesity rates were not as high as they are now.
Its not the toys in the Happy Meals, its the lack of exercise, the fact that kids dont play outside anymore. Its the "always on the go" culture that doesnt lend itself easily to healthy home cooked family dinners. Its also a complacent and lazy generation of parents or just overscheduled, or a combo of all 3, who were raised during the emergence of instant meals, frozen dinners, fast food, minute this, minute that, expensive raw foods, etc. We are really the first generation to have ALWAYS had these options available to us as adults, and the children pay the price, but its what we know.
Its not the toy thats the problem, in fact, its probably the least of the problems.

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal
before I read it I was kind of thinking it was stupid- but the article says that its only for meals that are over 600 calories- that seems like a lot of calories for a kid to consume in 1 meal and maybe this will force all restaurants to be more responsible and cut out the calories

Totally agree. Now these fat kids are going to get an adult sized meal because why stick with the happy meal if there's no toy? That's obviously going to work.

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal
I do like the senitments behind it, actually. It's not about the calories.. I think preteens are supposed to consume about 1700 calories a day depending on age/size/gender etc.
I hate the fact that govt. has to police people about what to eat, drink blah blah.. but sometimes it takes a drastic intervention as such to make people realize what's going on.
Its like the calorie labeling.. at Starbucks when I see many calories my latte is, I opt for something else..

I would like to know why fast food places don't have GRILLED chicken strips, or turkey burgers, or a ham sandwich.
Yes, I am a offender when it comes to an on-the-go lifestyle. But I wish that these places HAD better options. Thankfully, more places are going to veggies/apples/oranges rather than french fries. That is a start, but what about the main entree for kids?

I agree. Having the calories in my face when I am ordering definitely puts things into perspective on what I want to order or not.

ITA!
But I do think a children's meal containing more than 600 calories is not a childrens meal at all.

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal
Portion sizes are way out of control - the value meal used to be 6 mcnuggets, now its 10 (and the "big kids" meal is 6) - on the rare occasion I eat mcdonalds I get myself a kids meal!!
banning them won't do anything - like a pp said they'll just order adult meals. kids need to go out and play!

Anything to stop our children from putting that crap into their bodies. Why can't fast food places serve brown rice, veggie and bean burritos on a whole grain wrap? Or other healthy options. It's awful.

Because it costs the institution more to cook/prepare these grilled items. They would need to spend money on infrastructure upgrades, which would mean raising the prices to the customer which wouldn't fly in today's economic times.
Besides... just because something is grilled doesn't mean it will be better for you. With all the additives they need to add to these foods, the calorie count would be pretty high regardless.

If parents are going to bring their kids to McDonald's it doesn't make a difference if there's a toy or no toy. I think offering apples as a side is a start but no one is going to mcdonald's for a healthy meal or snack.

Absolutely. This completely ties into the research I do for nutrition. Eating better and having the availibilty of healthy options at fast food places equals a price increase. As it is right now, there is such a high level of obesity and juvenile diabetes, among a whole host of other illnesses within children under the age of 12, even more so at the poverty level.
It costs MONEY to eat healthy, and the bottom line is that the families that rely on fast food meals as their main source of food do so because they cannot afford fresh produce, proteins and grains. The high cost of agriculture, import and export of goods, and lack of some of our own resources is what has led to this epidemic, for lack of a better word. A family of 4 is operating on a poverty level yearly income of $22,050...a monthly income of $1,838. Once rent and bills have been paid, how much do you think is left over to go Stop and Shop or Whole Foods? It is really isn't hard to see how people have come to rely on cheap, fast food as opposed to healthy options. A family of 4 not operating on the poverty level usually chooses fast food for the convenience factor as opposed to the price factor.
It really boils down to priorities. If people were better educated on the benefits of healthy eating, and the federal government helped mandate legislation to provide more funds for wellness programs and put a stop to the use of high fructose corn syrup and imported goods with little to no nutritional benefit, then younger generations might have a fighting chance to reverese some of the damage has been done.

McDonalds doesnt or shouldnt have to serve rice and veggies....THEY ARE A BURGER JOINT! Thats their niche.....burgers and fries, its what they do. A company shouldnt have to rework its menu bc of the lack of responsibility people take for themselves.
People need to take responsibility for what they put in their mouths and stop putting it all on the FF chains to do it for them.
Open a healthy fare fast food joint if thats what people want. However, it doesnt seem the demand is there, since there arent any.

ITA with all of this!
I am so sick of people not taking responsibility for their actions. "My kids fat because McDonalds makes unhealthy food!" Yea, thats why your kids fat.
Yes, McDonalds is an option, but its not the only option when it comes to feeding your children. When I was a kid McDonalds was a treat we had once in a blue moon. I know some people who feed McDonalds and other fatty fast foods to their kids several times a week!

That commercial DISGUSTS me. Literally. I find it offensive that they suggest the idiocy of consumers to not know that high fructose corn syrup is naturally corn derived, but then to suggest that it is fine in moderation is laughable. That may be true for some things in life, but HFCS is EVERYWHERE as a cheaper sweetening agent. It's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to consume HFCS in moderation when it is IN EVERYTHING.

Once again, I agree with Melissa. As per my previous post, some people are forced to eat FF, or other unhealthy processed foods, due to economic restraints. Fast food companies shouldn't have to shoulder to fact that you (speaking generally) are feeding your child fast food out of laziness or convenience. They should not have to change their menu to suit your needs.
If you want something healthy on the go, pack it yourself. Bottom line. Pack a little insulated lunch cooler w/an icepack and bring your own healthy food with you. But that's too hard for most Americans. It's a real wonder we have this epidemic when people don't want to do things for themselves and expect everyone around them to change to suit their needs.

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal
i kinda giggled a bit about healthy fast food. there is a chinese food place by us who had strictly fresh/no cornstart, msg healthy food. Steam fresh items, limited "healthy" sauces, etc. Went out of business in three months. I was going there and the woman said all they want is fried junk.

I agree, I take my kids there 1x a month so they can eat french fries, not apples, which are what they are eating all the other days of the week!
Although I also agree that there is "corporate responsibility" and where our government can get involved to protect the public's health it should be done because not every parent is feeding their children properly at home.
