Re: can someone explain to me re: Target...

its the same pricipal as wal-mart... the quantitiy that they purchase from their supplies is so great that they can basically demand a specific price to undercut normal stores...

IE if you local grocery store, lets say waldbaums operates 64 stores... and buys 100 boxes of cheerios for each store... thats 6,400 boxes...

target has 1,743 stores... and if they buy the same 100 boxes for each store... thats 174,300.... so at that volume Kellogg's will cut them a better deal...

The catch: You're in target...try to just by groceries! HAHAHA I always leave with a cart full of stuff I never knew I needed!

LOL.. My BIL calls it the hundred-dollar store. We can never get out of there without spending at least $100.

I went on sunday because it is the only place I know of to get film developed anymore & since I had to wait an hour, I ended up with 3 pairs of tights, a pair of socks, a sweater, 2 bargain greatest hits CDs, some kind of audio table for hooking the laptop to the tv & chicken broth! Chat Icon

How come people hate on Walmart more though? Target is also non-Union & a national chain with the potential to steal business from local stores.

I hate Walmart because it is gross & a zoo, but most people make them out to be an evil empire? Is Target less evil? Not saying they are or aren't, just curious.

Re: can someone explain to me re: Target...

I think some of their items are cheaper than the grocery store, but overall I don't think you are getting as good a deal.

I often find I do better with coupons at the grocery store and there's not the temptation to buy extra crap I don't need.

They just opened up the produce/meat section this past spring, and honestly, it's not that cheap, and the selection is $ucky. Give me a grocery store anytime for that.

I literally JUST came back from Target too and noticed the girl over-charged me for an extra bag of Halloween candy by $5.00. I am keeping the receipt and asking for my money back next time I go.

(This has happened a few times there actually and not at the grocery store ever).

I think most people's issues stem from Walmarts allegedly shady business practices. I watched a documentary called Walmart: The High Cost of Low Living and it highlights some pretty raw and unethical business practices, namely discrimination against employees (mainly women), failure to comply with federal envrionmental guidelines, corrupt political influence, unethical labor relations, unethical corporate culture and a host of other concerns.

Check out this link: Walmart Watch

I only buy certain things in Target/Walmart because they are cheaper than the supermarket. Cereal, lean cuisines, smart ones, granola bars, milk, yogurt (when there isn't a sale), and skinny cow is all much cheaper.

Re: can someone explain to me re: Target...

maybe they keep the same price regardless of location? I knwo that grocery store items at grocery chains in NY are a lot more than many other states. but maybe Target keeps the prices the same? There is a really nice Super walmart in the town I grew up in in maine and their prices are even less than the grocery prices there - like 15% or more for certain items!

They have more buying power because of the overall size of the company.

Supermarkets are regional - you won't find Waldbaums in California, but you will find a couple of thousand Target stores there.

This is exactly what I was going to say. The same is for Walmart, they buy so much of XYZ brand that they can sell it for a lot cheaper than other retailers.

I think they are doing "Loss leaders" where they undercut the prices or sell it for near cost to get people in the store. then you wind up buying things in other aisles that are more profitable for them.

This is what I think it is, too. Certain grocery items are cheaper, although not all. They'll take a loss on some items in the hopes of making a profit on others.

Judging by this post, it seems to be working LOL.

You have to know what they sell cheaply so you can beat them at their own game by buying those items and getting OUT.

Easier said than done, I know.

Target has great prices on food... I go all the time! And then I buy a ton of stuff from the rest of the store too, every time.

It's funny you said this cuz I'm reading this thread going Chat Icon Chat Icon
I think they are cheaper on some items, but overall it's cheaper to shop the sales at the local grocery stores.
Example: chicken breast @ target $3.99/lb vs chicken breast @ uncle giuseppe's $1.99/lb
Banana's were 39 cents each the other day and I get them for 39 cents/lb....

I personally think it's like shopping the big box stores - you really have to be aware of what the pricing is cuz it's very easy to get sucked in to thinking it's cheaper based on a few loss leaders

i love target!! i was just there today actually!

the only thing i will say about their grocery section is that the freshness of their produce is poor... and cerain brands of milk they have on the shelves dont last very long before it expires

i do agree with pp that in certain ways it pays to shop sales at regular grocery stores.... esp since so many do double coupons!

Love Target too and having the grocery section is convenient but I agree about the produce. With the exception of a few items I pretty much shy away from produce.

Re: can someone explain to me re: Target...

I think when you go to Target for groceries, you have to think like you would going anywhere else-know your prices...cereal and a lot of dry goods and frozen foods are cheaper, but I found apples I liked to be about $4.00/lb.! It's convenient, sure, but just know your prices.
